Small earthquake wakes residents in Northern Thailand town

Residents in the Thai town of Mae Sariang got a rude awakening yesterday morning when an earthquake shook their houses. The epicentre of the quake was in Mae Ho Sub-district and four kilometres below the earth’s surface.

Many residents reported that the quake woke them up and they could feel their worlds shifting as their houses rocked. Local officials said that despite houses and buildings moving on their foundations there were no reports of any serious damage or people being injured.

Thailand’s Seismological Bureau has issued a statement saying that the earthquake measured 3.5 on the Richter Scale and struck at 04:28. Earthquakes and earth tremors are not that rare in Northern Thailand as five active fault lines cross it.

In May 2014, a 6.3 magnitude quake with an epicentre in Mae Lao struck. People living in provinces across the north of the country and in neighbouring Myanmar said they felt the shocks. One person died as a result of this quake. The Seismological Bureau recorded 180 aftershocks.
