Cambodia government sets deadline for rail link to Thailand

Cambodia’s tourism-minister says the government has set a deadline for the completion of a rail link to the town of Poipet. Speaking after going on a fact-finding trip to the construction site, Thong Khon stated that only six kilometres more of track needed laying to finish the project.

He carried on by saying that the government had given contractors until the end of 2016. When the line is completed it will provide the means of operating train services between the capital cities of Cambodia and Thailand, Phnom Penh and Bangkok respectively.

Ngor Meng Chroun is the mayor of Poipet and he said that to allow the line to be completed three casinos and the national immigration office in the town needed to relocate. He continued by saying that the Grand Diamond, Golden Crown and Tropicana casinos had so far not responded to the requests, but were aware when the premises were built that they were on or close to public land.

At the immigration outpost, commander Sim Sam Arth said the bureau was ready to move. He said new offices had already been built and the checkpoint could be moved at the drop of a hat.

At present, travelling between the two capital cities requires travellers to take several buses and trains and also walk across the border. With a new rail service the journey will be streamlined and made even simpler with tickets purchased from 12GO ASIA.
