As the embassy is closed on the 31 December and 1 January, it will effectively not be providing consular services or issuing visas until the New Year. The MFA has provided an emergency telephone number for people scheduled to pick up documents and passports during the closure period.
Similar demonstrations at the Three Pagodas Pass border post in Kanchanaburi caused local authorities to shut it. An estimated 300 demonstrators massed on the Myanmar side of the border on Monday.
This crossing has reopened as the protestors say they will wait for a response from authorities in Thailand before taking further action. The demonstrations have been triggered by the death sentence passed on two Myanmar nationals convicted of murdering two backpackers on the Thai island of Koh Tao.

Protests outside Thailand’s embassy in the Myanmar capital city of Yangon have resulted in its temporary closure. Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the three-day shutdown yesterday and added that it is due to end tomorrow.
