Thailand launches drink driving awareness campaign

Thailand has launched a drink awareness campaign for drivers ahead of the upcoming festive season holidays. The National Police Traffic Division has joined forces with the Thai arm of the Moet Hennessy Diageo drinks group in the move to persuade drivers to take a taxi if they have been drinking.

The New Year crusade is proactive and aimed at drunk-drivers before they get behind the wheel. Police-colonel Veeraveet Vatjanapukka said patrols would make alcohol tests available at selected nightlife venues so that drivers could check whether they were sober enough to drive.

He continued by saying that officers and representatives with the units would promote the theme of don’t drink and drive to get home safely. Uber is waiving its THB300 registration fee for new users for the duration of the campaign under the slogan of U drink, I drive.

Colonel Vatjanapukka noted that campaign officers would be out in force on weekend nights from Christmas Day until well into the New Year. The crusade is an attempt to reduce the number of drink-driving related accidents and death toll Thailand usually witnesses over the New Year holidays.
