New Year reopening scheduled for Bangkok Sukhumvit Planetarium

The management team at Bangkok’s planetarium have scheduled its reopening for the New Year. The Sukhumvit Road facility is due to open on 5 January 2016 and eight months after it closed for a major revamp.

The 50-year-old planetarium has had enhanced visual-aid equipment and fish-eye lens installed plus cinema-quality 5.1 surround sound. New aurora-style décor will enhance the sensation for visitors that they are actually on a voyage through outer space.

An official ceremony will mark the relaunch of the planetarium. The public will then be allowed free admission until national Children’s Day on 9 January. After that, standard entry prices of THB30 for adults and THB20 for children will apply.

The soundtrack for the planetarium shows is Thai. Prior to its closure, it offered English-language soundtracks on Tuesdays. The management has not so far confirmed whether this will still be an option.

Ditto Thailand worked with top graphics firm Evans and Sutherland on updating the half-dome planetarium to the expectations of 21st century stargazers. The planetarium is a part of the Thai National Science Centre complex and first opened its doors on Thai Science Day in August 1964.
