Thai cabinet gives green light to new Bangkok Orange subway

The Thai government cabinet gave the go ahead for construction of a brand new subway line on Tuesday. The Orange Line on the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) system will run between the Thailand Cultural Centre Station and Min Buri.

Transport-minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisit says this section of the Orange Line will be just over 20kms long and the cabinet hoped to put the first construction tenders out by the middle of 2016. He noted that the construction costs would require a budget somewhere around the THB90 million mark.

The government will pay for the tracks and infrastructure. The contracts for rolling stock and other operational equipment will be offered to private investors.  This is part of the government’s policy of encouraging private companies to invest and participate in Thailand’s future.

Parts of the Orange Line will be on the surface and parts underground. The announcement that the Thai government had approved the project triggered protests yesterday. Residents living in the environs of Prachasongkhro Road Soi 21 in Din Daeng say they do not want to be relocated to make way for the new MRT line.
