General Sommai Kaotira made his pledge to an image of the absent king at Sanam Luang Park in Bangkok. Thai dignitaries including defence-minister General Preecha Chan-o-cha were on hand to witness the commander’s oath.
The accompanying marching band played some songs originally penned by his majesty. The Royal Parade has been held every 2 December for more than 50 years and is a tribute to the king’s exalted status as leader of the country. The king’s birthday is also commemorated with a public holiday and national father’s day.
As 5 December falls on a weekend this year the public holiday is moved to Monday. This evening is the start of a three-day weekend. As is the case with most long weekends, Thais use the opportunity to take a short vacation. Transport authorities have already reported that roads and public transport are busier than usual.

A Trooping the Colour parade held two days ago marked the start of celebrations in honour of Thai King Bhumibol’s 88th birthday tomorrow. In excess of 2,000 military personnel took part in the parade before the supreme commander of the armed forces swore ongoing allegiance to the monarch.
