Silom Road street market to rise from the dust

Municipal authorities in Bangkok have released a schedule that will see one of the city’s popular street markets revived. The market will be staged twice a month on Silom Road in central Bangkok for the duration of the peak tourist season.

Stallholders will set up on both sides of Silom on the stretch between Naradhiwas Road and the Sala Daeng crossroads near Si Lom MRT Station. The market will operate between 15:00 and 21:00 and the first one will take place on Sunday 20 December.

The market will then operate on the following Sunday with subsequent ones in the new year scheduled for 10 and 24 January, 7 and 28 February, and 6 and 20 March. When news that the Silom market was being given a new lease of life was released, 1,800 traders registered applications to operate stalls.

Due to the massive interest, Bang Rak District’s council staged a lottery to select the lucky 200 winners. The market last opened in May 2015 after opening up the previous December. Thais refer to street markets as walking streets as it is a literal translation of the Thai name for them, thanon khon dern. The one on Silom provided residents and tourists with access to a huge diversity of products.

Leather wallets, unique hand-crafted toys, silk blouses, wooden games and T-shirts with inimitable logos and designs were just a small selection of the souvenirs sold. People heading into Bangkok from other parts of Thailand for the debut market will find 12GO ASIA’s ticketing services cheap and convenient.
