Sampling the pastoral delights of northeastern Loei

Loei is a mountainous province sitting in a triangle formed by north and northeastern Thailand with the mighty Mekong River and Laos on its north side. Muang Loei is a laid-back town and the provincial capital of this Thai province.

The town itself does not have much in the way of historic tourism sites. A stroll through the Queen Sirikit 72nd Anniversary Park or enjoying a traditional meal of barbecued chicken, spicy somtam papaya salad and sticky rice are the key highlights.

Muang Loei is a relaxing base for trips to the mountains and waterfalls enclosed by Phu Rua, Phu Kradung and Phu Suan Sai national parks. Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary is home to herds of wild elephants, diverse orchid species, rare frogs and dinosaur footprints. Chiang Khan’s Street Market is a good place to head to for matchless Lao and Thai souvenirs and handicrafts.

Muang Loei is 500kms from Bangkok and there are direct buses between the two. The departure terminal in Bangkok is Mochit and in Loei it is on Maliwan Road. Journey times are slightly over seven hours on air-conditioned express buses. 12GO ASIA sells tickets for this route and they provide a guaranteed seat reservation.
