Reduced price intercity bus fares coming to Thailand

Thailand’s Transport Ministry is set to adjust fares for intercity bus routes so that operators are able to compete with low-cost airlines. Darun Saengchai is a secretary with the ministry and he says bus companies will be allowed a reduction on minimum fares for certain routes between Bangkok and other major cities in Thailand.

He noted that the fares would be cut by up to 20 per cent and the effective date would be timed to coincide with the New Year holidays. He further explained that the fare reductions would be applicable on routes operated by franchisees and also on some that are operated by the state-run Transport Company.

Mr Saengchai said typical fares for air-conditioned buses from Bangkok to the north for example should drop from THB800 to THB600. He finished off by saying that after a meeting with representatives from the various bus operators everybody had agreed that the new fare structures would give greater flexibility and allow them to be more competitive.
