Typhoon Mujigae to bring more rain and winds to Thailand

The Meteorological Department of Thailand says Typhoon Mujigae should reach north and eastern Thailand sometime today. The department’s director says Mujigae will likely bring heavy rain and driving winds and has warned 32 provinces they are at risk of flooding.

Wanchai Sak-udomchai said the typhoon had been reclassified from a tropical storm early Sunday as it hit China’s Hainan Island with wind speeds of 140kmh. The director noted that Mujigae was advancing at a rate of 20kmh and was due to reach Vietnam last night and then sweep through Laos to Thailand.

He carried on by saying there was a 70 per cent chance of rain across the north, Esarn and in Bangkok and the central regions over the next few days. The likelihood of rain on the southern peninsula of Thailand is only 40 per cent and will mostly be on the east coast.

Heavy rain in Bangkok over the past week has led to flood-prone roads being left under water in districts such as Phaholyothin and Ratchadaphisek. In one district, authorities measured rainfall at almost six centimetres. The city’s deputy governor, Amorn Kitchawengkul, says rainfall this heavy can take up to three hours to drain off roads.
