Thailand to introduce six month tourist visas

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry has officially confirmed it will introduce a new category of tourist visa with six months validity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted up the confirmation on its Facebook page earlier this week and noted the new visas would be valid for unlimited entries.

The posting also stated that the multiple-entry tourist visas would be available from Thai embassies and consulates with effect from 13 November 2015. The price of the visas has been set at THB5,000. This amount is usually payable in the equivalent sum in local currency in whichever country the application is made.

Although the visa is good for six months’ usage, the holder will still have to leave the country every 60 days. The reason for this is that all tourist visas for Thailand last 60 days and the new visa will have the same restriction.

Tourist agencies in Thailand welcomed news of the extended tourist visas. They said it might encourage tourists to stay longer and in that way boost the national economy. They will also provide convenience for travellers planning on spending time in other Southeast Asian nations such as Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Tourist visas for Thailand are currently available for single, double or triple entries. In practice, most issuing offices will only issue single entries or, at a pinch, doubles. These currently cost THB1,000 per entry and can be extended for 30 days at in-country immigration offices for THB1,900.

Nationals of selected counties also have the option of obtaining visas on arrival which have either 15 or 30 days validity. This is dependent on the applicant’s nationality and whether the entry is via an airport or land crossing.
