North Bangkok roads close for extension of Skytrain line

Part of one of one of Bangkok’s arterial roads will close this weekend to allow for the construction of a Skytrain line extension. The system’s green line, or Sukhumvit Line, is being extended from its present northern terminus at Morchit as far as Khu Khot Station in Phathum Thani.

City authorities have already closed one lane on Phahon Yothin Road and say it will be closed off totally near Kasetsart University at 22:00 on Friday. This will allow for the demolition of a Phahon Yothin overpass which is scheduled to begin on Saturday morning.

The governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) stated that it would take three years to build the new line extension. Peerayuth Singpattanakul explained that bus users and motorists could expect delays and would need to allow extra time to complete their journeys for the duration.

He noted that as progress on the line moved ahead, roadblocks and closures would be changing. On a final note, he added that MRTA staff were working with their counterparts at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to work out a cohesive plan to ensure traffic flowed reasonably smoothly while construction was going on.
