Thailand pays respects to royal Queen on mothers day

Today is national mother’s day in Thailand and also a public holiday dedicated to the nation’s Queen Sirikit. The queen was born on 12 August 1932 and is celebrating her 83rd birthday today.

Although the queen no longer appears in public, her birthday is marked with ceremonies and commemorative events throughout the country. At Sanam Luang, the royal park in Bangkok, prime-minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is all set to preside over the annual candlelight ritual this evening.

Elsewhere in Bangkok, Sanam Suapa is the venue for musical performances featuring various Thai artistes and musical groups. The entertainment begins here at 19:00.

At Khlong Padung Krung Kasem Market, near the national Parliament building in Bangkok, a fair in honour of Queen Sirikit began on 3 August and will run through to 23 August. The fair is a tribute to the skills of Thai craft artisans. Vendors at the market have a full range of bamboo, wooden, cotton and silk utensils, souvenirs and clothing on offer.

In other Thai provinces, town or city halls are the focus of activities and colourful homage ceremonies. Tourism Authority of Thailand director Juthaporn Rerngronasa says international visitors are welcome to join the festivities on this auspicious occasion.
