Getting to the end of the Angkor Highway at Phimai

The 900-year-old buildings contained within what is now Phimai Historical Park mark the north end of the legendary Khmer Highway from Angkor Wat in modern-day Cambodia. Although not as grand as Angkor, Phimai is well worth a visit. Its unique temples, statues and the Pratu Chai elephant gate never cease to amaze.

From Bangkok to Phimai is a little over 300kms. The principal motorway, Highway 2, from Bangkok to the northeastern Thai towns of Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nong Khai passes 10kms to the west of Phimai. Passengers on interprovincial buses need to get off at Talad Kae Market and transfer to a local bus for the last leg of the journey to Phimai.

These local buses run every 20 minutes from early in the morning to around 18:30 in the evening. Some of these services are an extension of the route from Nakhon Ratchasima Town (aka Korat) to Phimai. For all your travel ticketing needs, 12GO Asia is a reliable source.

The historical park is at the centre of modern Phimai. A night market is held every evening close to the park and is a lively place to relax and watch the world pass by. Food vendors sell all manner of local delicacies with fried chicken, somtam spicy salad and noodle soup among popular dishes on offer.
