Bangkok crane fall stops traffic and trains

The collapse of a crane in Bangkok on Monday stopped traffic and trains on routes northwards. The incident took place near Don Muang Station a little after 08:30 and saw the crane’s jib overbalance as one of its support stanchions sank into soft ground.

The falling jib crushed two vehicles in the train station’s car park and ended up lying across the tracks. Thanupong Phucharoentanyawat was sitting in his Mitsubishi Pajero at the time and was injured when the jib smashed through his vehicle’s roof. He was taken to hospital where later doctors said his injuries were not life-threatening.

All trains to the north and northeastern regions of Thailand from Bangkok’s central Hua Lamphong Station were delayed while workers hastened to clear the debris and hoist the crane upright again. Traffic outside the station on Kamphaengphet VI Road was also halted until the crane was finally removed at 10:00.

The crane was being utilised on a project managed by Italian-Thai Development to build a suburban electric rail system. The two so-called Red Lines will eventually link Bangkok’s Rangsit and Hua Mak districts to stations in Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Pathom provinces.
