Bangkok adds another day to Silom water party

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has tacked another evening on for fun-seekers to enjoy water-fights on Silom Road. The clean-up operation due to start at 21:00 today has been put back until tomorrow morning to give revellers another chance to aim their water-guns and buckets.

The deadline is now midnight for one of the Thai capital’s prime water-fight locations. Authorities seemingly bowed to public pressure as thousands of Thais and international visitors were seen streaming into Silom from early this morning.

The BMA notification also warned motorists that the stretch of Silom between the intersections at Narathiwat Ratchanakharin and Sala Daeng will remain closed to vehicular traffic tonight until 00:00. The annual Thai Songkran Festival runs from 12 to 15 April, but celebrations invariably start on the 12.

In Silom and the other key water-fight areas such as Khao San Road and outside CentralWorld Plaza, vendors selling water-pistols and buckets were doing a brisk trade on Sunday. Although there are preferred areas for water-fights, the action takes place in varying degrees on most central city roads and highways in Thailand over the festival period.
