Myanmar opens bidding for Mandalay palace revamp

Myanmar’s Ministry of Culture says it is accepting bids for the restoration of a historic palace in Mandalay. Nyo Myint Tun is an official with the national museum bureau and he told media reporters Mya Nan San Kyaw Palace needs major repair and renovation work.

The bureau’s assistant director expounded by saying that in the past the palace has only needed minor repairs and routine maintenance, but this time around the main structures in the complex required significant restoration. Some work was carried out less than two years ago.

Mya Nan San Kyaw is called the Great Golden Royal Palace in English and is one of Mandalay’s best known tourism draws. It is a typical citadel design with defensive walls ringed by a moat and dates from the 1850s. It was the last residence built by Burma’s monarchy.

Under British colonial rule, the palace was known as Fort Dufferin. The palace complex sustained serious damage during WWII bombing raids and only a few of the main buildings were left standing. The first major revamp in the 1990s saw the palace restored to its former glory with modern materials used to better aid it to withstand weather extremes.
