Bangkok upgrades Lumpini pedestrian route

Bangkok municipal authorities have instigated a plan to improve a pedestrian route linking two downtown parks. The city’s current assistant-governor says the route linking Lumpini and Benjakiti parks will be upgraded to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The project on the path will see it landscaped to improve the overall aesthetic outlook and lights installed at strategic spots to safeguard people using it at night. The route actually stops 40-metres short of Benjakiti Park and the project will see this tacked on.

In several places, including at the Sarasin Intersection near Lumpini, gradients are steep and workers will try to level these a little so that they are easier to walk and cycle on. Assistant-governor Jumpol Sumpaopol told media sources in Bankok that the improvements should be complete in time for the annual Songkran holiday beginning on 12 April.

The route is just under two kilometres long and, for part of its length, follows the course of the Phai Singto Canal. Although it provides a convenient link between the Lumpini and Khlong Toei districts of Bangkok it is underused mainly because of the problems the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is now addressing.
