The governor expounded by saying the pier would be a convenient start point for trips to nearby islands such as Koh Chang and Koh Phayam. He added that it would also be a convenient jumping off point for people travelling onwards to Myanmar.
The upgrade at Tonson is being done in three stages. The first involves dredging the waterways leading to the pier so they can accommodate deeper draughted vessels. Strengthening embankments around the pier is the second part and will be followed with the construction of a bespoke passenger terminal.
Governor Kanchanasilp noted that if the number of travellers using Tonson in the future justified it, the facility had the potential to be turned into a multi-purpose port. He finished off by saying the jetty upgrade was in line with Ranong’s policy of making the province a tourist-friendly destination.

Provincial authorities in Ranong have released news of a project to upgrade a fishing-boat jetty so that it can accommodate tourist vessels. The governor of the southern Thai province, Suriyan Kanchanasilp, says work on the jetty at Tonson in Ngao Sub-district has already begun and the facility will soon be suitable for international visitors to use.
