Luang Prabang to mark UNESCO listing anniversary

Municipal authorities in Luang Prabang will be staging a cultural extravaganza this year to mark the listing of the Laos town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The celebrations will take place between 7 and 9 December and mark the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO designation.

Khampheng Xaysompheng is the governor of Luang Prabang Province and he says lots of activities, shows and a handicraft market will showcase the rich heritage of this region of northern Laos. He added that an elephant parade featuring a rare white elephant was sure to be a major draw.

The governor noted that there would be a photograph competition and art contest to ensure that younger visitors are catered for. He finished off by saying the grand event would underscore Luang Prabang’s position as the number one tourist destination in this landlocked Southeast Asian nation.

Town officials say there will also be displays depicting the efforts made in preserving Luang Prabang for posterity over the past two decades. The town’s history can be traced back over 1,300 years and it draws modern travellers with its wealth of attractive Buddhist temples and well-preserved colonial villas.
