Thailand opens international complaints hotline

Thailand officially inaugurated a tourist complaints helpline this week. By calling 1111, international visitors will be patched through to help-desk operators with language proficiency in English as well as Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.

The call-centre has been operating on a trial basis for the past six months. Chamroen Yutithamsakul, a senior official attached to the prime-minister’s office presided over the official inauguration ceremony.

Mr Yutithamsakul said the centre’s staff could handle questions or complaints about issues such as immigration procedures and subsequent requirements or refunds of the duty tourists are entitled to when they buy products in the kingdom. He noted that tourists with urgent problems should still call the tourist police hotline on 1155.

Another prime-minister’s office attaché, Panadda Diskul, says the call-centre operates 24/7. He added that when tourists come to Thailand they should consider Thai government staff and Thai people in general as friends they can turn to if in need of help.
