Laoag Philippines – Top 5 Attractions and Sights

Make no mistake in thinking that Laoag is just another sleepy city in the North. Are you in need of inspiration on what to do in this marvellous capital? Let us count the ways.

La Paz Sand Dunes – Have a Thrilling Ride

Probably the most famous attraction here in Laoag, La Paz Sand Dunes (Brgy. 33 La Paz) spells fun, adventure, and one hell of a heart-stopping ride. We paid PHP2500 for an hour's ride on a 4x4 and it quickly became the highlight of our Northern Luzon escapade.

As we rode across the sandy terrain, it was obvious that the driver really knew the area like the back of his hand. He would bring us to the most scenic viewpoint and drop us from the highest peaks. It's an experience akin to riding a rollercoaster except it might be wise to wear sunnies to prevent sand from getting into your eyes. It was amazing riding all over the dunes. We could see the sea nearby and we were lucky to be there just in time for the gorgeous sunset. We also got to try sand boarding and while it may have been nerve-wracking in the beginning, we soon got the hang of it and were squealing like kids in no time. We were there in the afternoon but we were told the area is open from 5:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Sinking Bell Tower – Get Your Camera Ready!

If you have a penchant for photography, you will surely delight in capturing the Sinking Bell Tower (A. Bonifacio Street). This historic landmark has been in existence since the Spanish era and is now said to be sinking at a rate of an inch per year. No one can quite explain the reason why but there's definitely no shortage of theories, one among them says that the bell is too massive or that the bell tower stands on a too sandy land. In any case, it is an interesting site and is most probably the very first thing you see when you get to the city.

St William’s Cathedral – White & Gold and Atmospheric

Situated not more than 80 meters away from the bell tower is the city's main cathedral, St. William's Cathedral. As always, it offers a serene atmosphere and its white and gold interior is beautifully preserved. If you can, check the mass schedule for an early morning mass. We recall attending a mass here shortly before 5 am and the church was really beautiful against the dawn sky and the lit bell tower located nearby.

Santa Monica Parish Church – Beautiful Stained Glass Windows

You may have seen quite a number of churches by now but make sure not to miss the Santa Monica Parish Church (Poblacion, Brgy San Leandro). Just when we thought we've seen it all, we couldn't be more wrong. We were simply in awe of this church's architecture.
Built in 1779, it boasts having the longest church aisle in the country, modern stained glass windows, and beautiful brickwork. Don't forget to look up towards the roof, it is stunning! Don't miss the convent, the museum, and the huge courtyard with ancient trees.

Museo Ilocos Norte – Have a Glimpse of the Local History

For a small admission fee of PHP50, relive the past of the Ilocano people by spending at least an hour at the Museo Ilocos Norte (General Antonio Luna St.) A refurbished warehouse, it also features a souvenir shop and is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm. The museum houses some really interesting artifacts, musical instruments, clothes, potteries, and more. The displays came with labels and facts so it was a really good chance for us to reconnect and get to know the region's storied past.
