Hangzhou China – 10 Hotels to Stay in All Price Ranges

Since it’s a popular tourist destination for both local and foreign visitors, it comes as no surprise that there are loads of places to stay in Hangzhou. It’s rich cultural and natural landscapes draw visitors from around the world. For the budget-conscious there are backpacker joints across the city. Hangzhou is the economical centre of the province, so there’s loads of business hotels to choose from, and there are also great affordable family-friendly places.

Be aware that hotels in China need a license to accept foreigners – when you book make sure they’re aware.

Stay on a budget

There is a wide range of affordable accommodations across the city, but generally things get more expensive the closer you are to West Lake or the city centre. The city has high standards when it comes to accommodation, so expect good facilities at an affordable price. Backpackers are neat and clean, offering shared rooms that usually have free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are usually shared, however many backpackers also offer private rooms at an affordable rate. You normally won’t get breakfast, but if you do it’s Chinese style.

You’ll pay around 50 RMB for a hostel, and upwards of 150 RMB for a private room in a hotel. Choose carefully – read the reviews! Here are some good ones to check out:

1. Wushanyi International Youth Hostel

From 50 RMB

The best thing about this hostel is it’s location, right near Wushan Square. It’s clean, neat and affordable. Play a game of pool in the shared lounge, or browse the net with the free Wi-Fi.

2. Westlake Youth Hostel Manjuelong Branch

From 55 RMB

Great location (very near West Lake) but what we loved most is the restaurant on site- they sold delicious local delicacies and western food. On Saturdays, enjoy an outdoor barbeque! The mountain views are also stunning-rent a bike and go for a ride.

3. Hangzhou Bokai Westlake Hotel

From 150 RMB

A little more expensive, but you get more out of it. Great location for seeing the sights, tasty food and helpful staff who’ll assist you in arranging your exploring. Nearby is Song dynasty Imperial street, Lingyin Temple and Hefang street, and it’s only a 5 minute drive from Hangzhou railway station.

4. Hanting Express Hangzhou West lake Jiebai

From 200 RMB

Hanting is huge hotel chain in China offering budget accommodation. We like them because they usually accept foreigners, and you always know exactly what you’re going to get.
This is the best one in the city because it’s only 600 meters from Wushan Square. Enjoy your own private room and bathroom, and a TV to unwind after a long day sightseeing.

Mid-level accommodation

These make up the large majority of Hangzhou’s hotels. Choose a 3-4 star hotel if you are looking for a little more comfort or a place to take the family. You’ll usually get satellite TV, gyms, swimming pools and in-house restaurants. They are scattered across the city and if you know where to look, you’ll find a good deal. The most convenient ones are near a subway stop, or closer to sightseeing destinations like West Lake. You’ll get breakfast in Western and Chinese styles, and you’ll pay between 300-800 RMB for a night.

5. Huachen International Hotel

We loved this hotel! It’s an absolute bargain for a quality four-star hotel. They have stunning rooms, painstakingly decorated to the finest detail. They are designed to let in as much natural light as possible. On the 19th floor you can dine with a stunning view of the city, and enjoy western food at Four Seasons Western-Style Food & Coffee House. There’s another restaurant if you’d like something more local- Tang Palace Chinese Restaurant. There’s a tour desk to help you arrange your travel itinerary.

6. Cosy Park Hotel

Choose this for a family-friendly hotel. It’s close to the metro station and there’s a sun terrace as well as a spa so you might opt not to leave the hotel at all! For the kids, they’ve got a playground. Certain rooms have a terrace or a balcony, and all they’re all air conditioned. A bathrobe and slippers are provided for your comfort. It’s a more peaceful setting than you’ll usually find, so enjoy the tranquillity. Rent a bike and see the sights! There’s also a great little restaurant.

9. Amanfayun

From 3950 RMB

This stunning guest is found in a serene natural forest, surrounded by tea fields and five Buddhist Temples. Originating from the Tang dynasty, there are 47 dwellings that at first housed workers who worked on the nearby tea fields. These have been magnificently redesigned into a guest house that offers some of the best facilities in the world. There’s a beautiful restaurant serving a range of western dishes. Don’t forget the spa- move between five different buildings in the midst of a bamboo grove and magnolia trees. There are separate rooms for reflexology, tai chi, yoga and meditation. It’s a great place for cycling, also visit the on-site Tea Museum.

10. Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou At West Lake

Come here for a real traditional feel, and a cosy luxurious holiday on the West Lake. It’s in the midst of a stunning Chinese garden, see pagodas, temples and Jiang Nan architecture. The hotels design flawlessly blends Eastern and Western styles, and although it’s part of a massive chain, there are actually only 81 rooms so expect privacy. The on-site Jin Sha restaurant provides guests with local, Shanghainese and Cantonese cuisines. All ingredients are fresh and locally sourced!
