Kinabalu National Park Malaysia – Best Places to Stay

Accommodation options for the adventurous and gutsy preparing to summit Mt Kinabalu are in great supply in Kinabalu. It seems that no matter what you do, your chances of landing a place with exceptional views are pretty high.

Where to look for accommodation

The majority of accommodations are suited to groups of travellers and families, however, diversity in preferences and lodging amenities are all well catered for here in this green oasis. It is important to note that all accommodations that are booked within the borders of park must be done so through Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. It is also worth noting that lodging options outside of the park itself are considerably cheaper and might be preferable to those minding their pennies.

Outside the park

Extremely affordable rooms are available in abundance if you head out beyond the gates of the park.

Kinabalu Mountain Lodge is a shining example of such. With incredible views of the surrounding mountains, wonderfully friendly staff and a very rustic and organic feel, it is ideal for those looking to submerge themselves in nature and recharge for a few days. A single bed at the lodge will set you back a mere MYR 20, whereas families of up to six need only spend MYR 120 for a spacious room with a balcony overlooking the scenes of tranquillity below.

Only slightly more expensive but well worth the money is J Residence. The lodging is just a few hundred meters from the entrance to the park and is the closest you can get without being inside. Prices are based per villa or chalet, and start at around MYR 100. The chalets are extremely tranquil, nestled in amongst the leafy trees and offer guests fantastic views from each of their private balconies.

Alternate options for the budget conscious traveller include Ayana Holiday Resort, Tahubang Lodge, and the D'Villa Rina Ria Lodge which, quite notably, have some a great selection of local cuisine at their restaurant. Be sure to check these spots out should you want a comfortable, affordable and recommended spot for the night.

Providing a fantastic array of options for all budgets and needs, Kiram's Village Cabins offer standalone cabins with an attached balcony and clean, simple en suite bathroom. The lower-end cabins are simple but comfortable and offer all the basic necessities at a reasonable MYR 80 per night. The accommodation also caters superbly to groups of travellers preparing to tackle the breathtaking summit of Mt Kinabalu. Spacious, rustic, and earthy two bedroom cabins equipped with a kitchen and a BBQ pit start at around MYR 220. These cozy cabins can sleep up to six, making the cost per person an affordable and excellent option for those traveling in groups.

Inside the park

Seeking accommodation within the park leaves you with only a few options and unfortunately, these options are pricier in comparison. Prices at Kinabalu Park vary according to season and therefore you’ll need to check the various dates against your period of stay. Options include staying in a dormitory, a private room as well as the option of renting your very own private lodge. Prices are steep with the lowest being MYR 70 for a space in the dormitory. Staying within the park itself is of course stunning and comes with the benefit of tranquillity beyond compare as well as immediate access to the natural wonders around you.

Providing one of the most hidden and peaceful environments of all the accommodations within the area, Mesilau Nature Resort, nestled amongst the foothills on Mount Kinabalu, is an absolute dream for nature enthusiasts. When staying at Mesilau your exclusive exposure to the magical wilderness is second to none. The rates are entirely contingent on the time of year and the days of the week that you stay, so be sure to plan your stay carefully. The resort offers guests a variety of rooms and private lodges. Dorms are relatively cheap and clean whereas the King's Lodge is decadent, supremely comfortable and has truly spectacular views of the surrounding mist-capped hills.
