Iconic Bangkok bar Cheap Charlie’s officially reopens tomorrow

The proprietor of Bangkok’s legendary Cheap Charlie’s Bar has confirmed tomorrow will see the reopening of the facility in a new location. According to the bar’s Facebook page, the bar will officially rise from the ashes just eight months after it closed.

Cheap Charlie’s has moved around seven kilometres and six BTS Skytrain stops down Sukhumvit Road from its original location on Sukhumvit Soi 11. The new venue is among the collection of shops, cafés and restaurants at the Beacon Place complex on Sukhumvit Soi 50.

Beacon Place is just five minutes on foot from Onnut Station. A sneak preview of the new bar reveals much of the memorabilia from the original has been teleported. 12GO ASIA notes that as Beacon Place is a more modern venue, bathroom facilities should be a tad better than at the old location.

Such was the fame of Cheap Charlie’s during its 35-year tenure on Soi 11, taking a cheap drink at the bar was almost a rite of passage for a generation of international travellers. It ranked along with the likes of the glitzier bright lights of Nana Plaza and Patpong as a must visit spot on one night in Bangkok odysseys.
