Passenger on tracks disrupts Bangkok Skytrain services

Services on Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain network were severely disrupted this morning after a passenger fell on the tracks. A commuter waiting for a train at Ratchathewi Station fainted and fell off the platform onto the track a little after 07:00 this morning.

Officials at the station managed to halt approaching trains while they rescued Suwadee Heng-Udom, 22. The rescue took a little time and passengers crowding onto the platforms to catch trains led to severe congestion.

The hold up of trains at Ratchathewi had a knock-on effect and there were significant delays across the Skytrain system. Trains are now back to normal.

Once she regained consciousness, Ms Heng-Udom told her rescuers that she must have just passed out. Apart from a cut above her eye, she seemed none the worse for the untimely fall.

The BTS Skytrain launched services in December 1999 and was the Thai capital’s first modern public transport system. It was designed to offer commuters and tourists an alternative to an aging bus fleet.

The Skytrain has two lines with an interchange at Siam Station. It links a number of the tourism, shopping and hotel districts in the city. At Phaya Thai Station there is an interchange for Airport Link services to Suvarnabhumi Airport.
