Room rates at hotels in Southeast Asia on the rise

A global hotel comparison website says nightly room rates across Southeast Asia are increasing by significant percentages. Trivago operates as an aggregator and compares prices for hotels displayed on reservations websites such as Agoda, Booking.com and Expedia.

Trivago says hotel rates in Laos and the Philippines have shot up by more than a third in the past 12 months. Average rates in the Lao capital of Vientiane were US$67 in April 2014. The median prices for the same city are now US$92.

Prices for the whole of the Philippines, which includes the capital Manila and resort islands such as Boracay, have gone up by 20 per cent over the same time period. It is the same story in Thailand which recorded an 18 per cent increase across the nation.

The popular northern Thai city of Chiang Mai has seen its average accommodation price rise by 27 per cent to THB3,150. Trivago noted that pre-booked rates in Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia had all gone up as well.

The only exceptions seem to be Myanmar and the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur where rates dropped slightly. Singapore remains the most expensive Southeast Asian destination to spend a night in with the average hotel room currently costing SGD221 (US$167) a night.
