Hanoi Airport starts hourly rates for sleep pods

The operator of an onsite room service at Hanoi Airport has introduced a per hour fee and done away with the three-hour minimum stay. The hourly rate for a single pod at Hanoi Noi Bai Airport is now VND120,000 (US$5.6) and a double costs VND130,000 (US$6).

The price increases came into effect on 15 April 2015. The pod-prices were previously based on three-hour rentals with a flat rate of VND210,000 (US$9.7) for a single and VND252,000 (US$11.70) for a double.

Although people wishing to use the pods for one hour now pay less, the rate over a three-hour rental is up to 70 per cent more expensive. The Vietnam Aviation Tourism Corporation justified the de facto increase by saying operators of sleep pods at airports in the US, the UK and Singapore charged more.

The spokesperson continued by saying a sleep pod cost a minimum of US$10 an hour at airports in these countries and could be as high as US$30. He noted that none of the airports surveyed offered a consolidated three-four fee.

Noi Bai‘s sleeping pods were inaugurated last July, but the Vietnamese Civil Aviation Administration locked the doors three days later in an issue over the correct paperwork. They were opened again two months later. The collection of 14 spacious pods is located on the upper level of Terminal 1 at the airport.
