Everything was fine. Nice crew, meal was good, luggage was directly transferred to my next flight.
Zug #38 1st Class Sleeper, Thai Railways, 01.03.2020
Even the 1st class the 38 train was very dirty and old, people smoked nearby and all smoking odours went inside our personal suits. The restaurant was also unexceptionable dirty and disgusting, we were starving but could not eat there. Bedding was comfy and clean.
Zug #170 2. Kl Schlafwagen Ventilator, Thai Railways, 21.02.2020
There was a nearly two hour delay at the beginning of the trip as the train, already thirty minutes late at Hat Yai sat in the station for about ninety minutes more
There was no explanation at all from the crew
So the arrival to Hua Lampong was also delayed by over two hours

Didn't get the lower sleeper berths which I requested
Zug #32 2. Kl Schlafwagen AirCon, Thai Railways, 11.01.2020
Very comfortable and smooth ride. Staff were very efficient and pleasant. The toilets and wash area were kept clean throughout the trip. Unfortunately our order placed the night before for a mixed fruit platter at breakfast had to be cancelled as only one fruit was available. Setback is that train arrived at destination 90 minutes behind schedule. Yet will definitely travel the same train again, and recommend to others who have the time to travel the slow lane.
Bus VIP 31, Transport Co, 25.12.2019
It says 1:30 but the bus arrived at 3 PM and the travel time is much longer than expected.
Zug #32 2. Kl Schlafwagen AirCon, Thai Railways, 24.12.2019
The train is new and nice, comfortable sleeping in 2nd class lower berth. Though arrived to Bangkok 2 hours late and missing all my connections to Trat, I can't complain about train #32. My own fault for not buffering enough time.
Bus Express, Sri Siam Tour, 24.12.2019
Though long hour but still the economy way to go to bangkok. Bus operator provides with blanket , snack and drink.

Zug #38 2. Kl Schlafwagen AirCon, Thai Railways, 30.11.2019
The train was two hours late arriving in Bangkok but I gather that's common in Thailand! The beds were comfy, the journey smooth, the staff helpful and the food was spot on!
Zug #38 2. Kl Schlafwagen AirCon, Thai Railways, 26.11.2019
Bed is bit old, but quite okay
Zug #32 1st Class Sleeper, Thai Railways, 13.11.2019
Great train trip and food quality accommodation.
Bus VIP, Sri Siam Tour, 29.10.2019
In Hat Yai, I have to take a tuk tuk from railway station to bus terminal, this is not included in the total fee. Why can't you make it clear to the driver to stop both in the railway station and bus terminal?
Zug #170 2. Kl Schlafwagen AirCon, Thai Railways, 17.09.2019
Journey was great, a lot of fun, but it did run two hours late so I missed my connection. (Admittedly I should have heeded the warnings and booked a later connection and I got a full refund for the train I missed.) So no complaints if you are prepared for slowness. Great way to see the landscape, try local snacks and avoid horrendous carban emissions from flights.
Zug #38 1st Class Sleeper, Thai Railways, 10.09.2019
Very comfortable though delay due to new railway track under construction I presume.
Zug #172 2. Kl Schlafwagen Ventilator, Thai Railways, 05.09.2019
Ttrain delay 3 hours... And the staff did not make any announcements regarding delay.. every one hours, we need to check and confirm. They just telling us to wait 30 minute...again 30 minute..and 30 minute..
Zug #32 1st Class Sleeper, Thai Railways, 25.08.2019
Top bunk in 1st class is difficult to access for people over 70s. Should have a ladder to assist rather than foot steps. The station at Hat Yai needs better signage for picking up tickets. The station attendants were very helpful.

Rolling stock needs replacing.

Booking through 12go was good and responsive. The ticket collection on departure day was also smooth. However, the train ride was a big let down. We initially wanted to book on the newer train 32 but it was full. As our trip was restricted by dates, we took train 38 which turned out to be a nightmare. We wanted to shower but the shower room was so dirty and stink of urine that we dare not spend time taking shower. Though we took 1st class sleeper, the cabin was dirty and stained. However, sheets and pillow were clean. The towel blankets were too thin to keep us warm in the freezing air con. Train delayed for almost 3 hours. If possible try all means to avoid train 38.
Zug #38 1st Class Sleeper, Thai Railways, 15.08.2019
We were happy with the booking process but disappointed with this trip. We travelled first class but there was nothing first class about it. The food was bad and took one hour to come in an unpleasant and noisy dining carriage. Aircon in the cabin was cold and could not be adjusted. There was a strong smell of urine for most of the trip and to top it all off this train arrived three hours late which caused us to miss an important meeting in Bangkok. Calling it an Express train is laughable. We will be flying next time.

I found all Thai Rail staff helpful and pleasant - both at Hat Yai and on the train.
The train was 2.5 hours late into Hua Lamphong. This was about the same as when I last took the same journey about one year ago - so the late arrival was no surprise.
This journey was a great travel experience. I recommend it.
Zug #38 1st Class Sleeper, Thai Railways, 07.07.2019
The scenery on this train trip is spectacular. This is the best reason to do it. You get a look at Thai rural life at its most quotidian, what else is travel for? The train itsel travels at quite a pace and stops for 10ish minutes every few hours. We stayed in first class cabins and in terms of comfort we were very happy. The bunks in the albeit small cabins are comfortable and long and are lit with reading lights and kept very cool with A/C. The toilets in 1st are nice and clean too. The food is pretty satisfactory though the dining cars seats are pretty dubious. Despite this the dining car is the best place to sit and watch the landscape. Or between the wars on the step, for a bit of fun. The staff are friendly and helpful. Try not to wake them by moving between cars at 10pm. All in all I couldn’t recommend any form of travel between the anodyne Malaysia and the more exciting Thailand higher.
