I paid for a Deluxe trip, but apparently the coach was in repair and we got a substandard coach with hard beds, we had to pay for coffee and tea and the attendant didn’t communicate this well.
Also, we asked if the trip could be booked earlier, and I received an answer after more than two days when we were already at the station platform.
Train itself was good, but I would seriously consider booking a 4 berth if there is only two of you. The mother/daughter we shared with were lovely but the mum snored the entire time. Great to engage with the local children who want to improve their English at the train station prior to departure.
Es ist ziemlich laut und wackelig. Die Betten sind steinhart. Wie mussten dem Zugbegleiter 500.000 geben, damit er uns keine weitern Gäste ins Abteil einteilte. Eine Quittung für die 500.000 erhielt wir nicht.
Pünktliche Abfahrt, komfortables Schlafabteil, alles in allem eine sehr angenehme Fahrt. Der Verkäufer am Morgen, der uns zu dem (inbegriffenen) Frühstück noch Bao Buns und Bahn Mi-Stangen verkauft hat, war allerdings recht aufdringlich...
Wir hatten mit unseren 2 kleinen Kindern ein Viererabteil für uns alleine und die Nacht war durchaus okay. Die Betten sind etwas hart, aber okay das Essen vor Ort im Zug war super und alles lief problemlos ab. Also auch für Familien mit Kindern geeignet.

Pros: Bed was sufficient comfortably, closed cabins so the train noise allowed us to sleep well. You travel while you sleep, save on accommodation. Still an experience to make the journey on these trains. Nobody checked our tickets and there’s no need to have printed version.
Cons: cleaning is like the average in Vietnam. Just take baby wipes with you ;-) Only one power socket per cabin, better to have a multiple usb charger, so everyone can charge their devices. Train was late. You only get access to platforms like 10min before train arrives.
My experience regarding value for money (€90 per person) was not positive. The train driver frequently braked abruptly, and the toilets were out of order. If there are four of you, you can have a cabin to yourselves; if there are fewer, other passengers will share the cabin.
