De voordelen van reizen per trein
- Het beste aan reizen per trein is dat er geen files zijn. Zelfs niet in de spits, lange weekends of tijdens het hoogseizoen.
- Tickets kunnen snel en eenvoudig online geboekt worden. U hoeft niet naar het station te gaan, wat nog niet zo lang geleden op veel plaatsen het geval was!
- Prijzen voor treinkaartjes zijn meestal voordeliger in vergelijking met vliegtickets, maar voor bepaalde bestemmingen en reizen kan de totale reistijd bijna gelijk zijn.
- Hoewel reizen per trein natuurlijk langzamer is dan per vliegtuig, liggen de treinstations vaak in het centrum van de stad, wat u veel tijd bespaart om er te komen, terwijl luchthavens bijna altijd een heel eind buiten de stad liggen.
- Reizen 's nachts stelt u in staat te besparen op een hotelkamer en goed te slapen op hetzelfde moment, in tegenstelling tot een nachtbus waar zelfs de slaapklasse niet heel comfortabel is.
- Op bepaalde routes is een luxe service beschikbaar.
Nadelen van reizen per trein
- Voor langere reizen is een treinreis zeker tijdrovender dan een vliegreis.
- Treinen rijden wel op schema, maar vertragingen zijn niet ongehoord bij treinreizen en vertragingen kunnen enorm zijn, dus als u een aansluiting op uw vlucht plant, kijk dan goed hoe laat uw trein op het station aankomt en denk twee keer na.
- Netheid is soms een probleem in tweede of derde klasse, en ook de toiletten zijn niet altijd even hygiënisch.
- Als uw trein veel stopt, is het in sommige gevallen moeilijk om uit te vinden wanneer u moet uitstappen, omdat de haltes niet altijd duidelijk worden aangekondigd of gemarkeerd, met uitzondering van een elektronisch scherm.

The train ride in itself is comfortable. The views are magnificient. However the tickets are very expensive. Reduce the ticket price or atleast provide lunch.

Viceroy II is a great heritage luxury train carriage, a fun way to travel through Sri Lanka. The scenery from Kandy to Ella is spectacular and well worth the trip. Our favourite part of the journey was actually going into the other carriages where we could experience the “real” Sri Lanka train and benefit from the open windows and doors for the breeze and photos (Viceroy II has small sealed windows with AC)... if we did it again we would just buy a normal 2nd class ticket. But ViceroyII does exactly what is promised. Oh we were an hour late too... but who cares!

The train was late and got later, such that the last hour was in darkness. The exterior of the coach was shabby to say the least and appears to be under renovation.
Unfortunately the windows are ridiculously small so if you are on the "wrong side" of the carriage your view is negligible. We got off and joined the main train in second class and had a far better view all around! If you want to sit in comfort and chat without concern for the beautiful scenery then perfect! However, if you want to appreciate the wonderful landscapes then book the "cheap seats"!

Luxurious cabin and great service but the train was delayed by an hour so we missed a lot of the scenery due to the darkness.

Fabulous trip. A step back in time. Classic carriage, beautiful ride through the tea plantations. Little rocky at times, but just added to the atmosphere. Highly recommend.

The Viceroy II wagon had comfortable chairs, and we were given two cups of coffe/tee each during the ride. The amazing view of beautiful green tea plantations, hill landscape and small Sri Lankan villages really makes the trip memorable. The Viceroy II tickets were more expensive than other alternatives, but worth the money if you ask me. 4 out og 5 stars because the AC actually made the journey a bit cold ???? But both my partner and I would absolutely recommend a trip!!

Seats were very comfortable. There was conflicting information about whether or not good would be served. In the end they did offer food but charged extra. Great staff, great coffee. The train was on time.

The train was very late arriving at Peradenya and got later and later so the part of the journey which was important to us was in the dark - we saw nothing of the wonderful scenery we had heard so much about and eventually arrived at Ella 4 hours late at 10.30 pm. The driver had waited for hours for us to arrive and, when we arrived at our Hotel, it was too late for Dinner, which had been booked. All in all, a very disappointing and disastrous trip.

This train ride was incredible! I wasn't sure what to expect and was very pleasantly surprised! The train was comfortable and the staff were lovely; provided tea and coffee and refreshments were available for purchase. The car was equiped with wifi and was very comfortable. The trip itself was stunning and the countryside was absolutely beautiful. This is a must-do in Sri Lanka!

The train was very late so missed the best views between Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Carriage very old and uncomfortable.
Staff and service were very good. Toilet was clean.

It's a beautiful view throughout. The train quality and ride are endearing at first but become tiresome looking and uncomfortable.
I wouldn't book it again.

Very comfortable classic old coach. Good bar service and dedicated loo.

A train up ahead broke down and had to be retrieved with a new locomotive. The staff handled that situation excellently. We had to change the train set two hours from the destination but we got the same class we paid for. It’s an great way to travel, full service as well. Even a place where you can smoke during the ride!

Unfortunately the viceroy carriage had needed to be sent for repairs but the replacement was extremely good and the trip was one of our highlights. The staff were very helpful and pointed out places of interest. Refunds were processed effectively. I would book again.

User-friendly and efficient booking service for the Viceroy II luxury train trip to Kandy. Ticket was readily accepted at Colombo Fort station without any hiccups whatsoever. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, this train ride did not meet our expectations. The air conditioning was already very cold for us and I caught a little cold. Unfortunately you can here (because of the
Air conditioning) do not open the windows. So unfortunately you can not take photos and follow the landscape quite well. Unfortunately, you cannot go through the train because the wagon is self-contained.
But you also have to say that the staff were very nice and they also manage to restrict coffee during a rocking train ride. There was also a toilet in the wagon which was also very neat and clean.

Really pleasant travel experience. We took a first class train Kandy to Colombo and this was 100x better. Large comfy seats, old school class. The carriage is old and you can tell but it’s function is not impacted. The train is of course super slow and at times very wobbly, but that’s how you can enjoy the breathtaking views

We took this train after reading it was one of the most beautiful ones and that was true! The scenery is beautiful!!! The carriage is so pretty inside, outside could use paint as it is not at all as in the photos. On the negative side the train picked us up almost one hour late, and we lost 2 more hours on the way so all in all it took almost double the time (around 6hrs). Just beware not to have flights or anything booked immediately after, just in case.

We took the VIP carriage as they were the last tickets available to pre-book. The guy who worked in the carriage was very accommodating and the train itself was definitely better quality than the regular trains and very comfortable. Lunch is not included in the price so bring snacks if you don’t want to pay a premium for what is available on board. We were quite happy with beer, coffee and potato chips though. We arrived 1 hour later but that’s to be expected.

The ride was ok, the seats were confortable, the look of the carriage it's retro and looking nice. We would've hoped to get also some lunch, we got tea or coffe twice. But we enjoyed it so much because the images on the road are amazing. So, thank you 12goasia for giving us the opportunity to experience that!

We loved everything about the carnage really. I’m rating it 4 star only because the windows can’t open and you really can’t see the scenery and take same pictures either . But everything else was perfect. Very comfortable, WiFi, a bar to order drinks, no food though but we managed to order some sort of lunch boxes from one of the stations.

Good train trip! Comfortable chairs, toilet and possibility to order something to drink. Not much snacks to chose from, i would recommend to pre-order lunch. Great way to travel with our 2,5 year old!

We were expecting a little more luxury from the Viceroy II carriage and more than one cup of tea for the entirety of the journey. We had to pay for our 2nd cup of tea, which given the cost of the ticket we expected to be complimentary. However, it was a scenic journey and we're glad we had the experience.

It would be great to get all details on the booking: when booking, I was sure I was paying for all services, including lunch and water. There was no suggestion to add more services. But when in carriage, I was surprised to learn my booking didn't include lunch!
Train was almost 2 hours late to reach Ella, I was almost dead.

Cabin looks very tired and dusty..... we had to change train as there was a landslide.... Viceroy 11 passengers including my family had no seats in 1st Class as all other passengers from other carriage had occupied in the new train ..... was total chaos and badly organised by JF Tours who runs the Viceroy 11.

Nice view from the train. Great landscape. Good service.
Unfortunately the air conditioning was very strong, so I had a cold afterwards. Train arrived with 2 hours delay.

We had the whole carriage to ourselves between Colombo and Peradenya. The carriage definitely needs updating starting with a fresh coat of pain on the exterior as initially I though it was a freight car. The interior seats were very much worn out and lighting was so dim that made the whole experience quite depressing.
For the price, it definitely not worth it.
