Our trip Hanoi - Lao Caï was on time (from 10pm to 6:08) in a relatively clean but rather noisy sleeping car. The controller entered at 4 am to wake up two passengers (two of us too necessarily) and brought two others on their place for 2 remaining hours. Were they so stupid to book a sleeping car for two hours ? And to sleep where other people slept a few minutes ago ? I doubt. Anyhow we would have slept better without all this cinema.

The trip was fine. Comfy in a soft bed and alone in the compartment. Plus at arrival the company worker woke me up.

The coach was fine, but it would be better if the staffs can speak basic English since there are lots of foreigners who traveled by train as well. The coach could be cleaner, I struggle to fight with a cockroach and asking help from staffs that understand zero English, so I need to speak Vietnamese to them (google translate). Overall, it was a great experience.

Train left and arrived bang on time. Beds pretty comfy, about 180cm long. However our part of the carriage was absolutely boiling, woke up sweating so many time

We really enjoyed our journey to Sa Pa. Our compartment was clean and comfortable - the beds were on the firm side, but we like that. The train departed and arrived on time. There was some clunking and banging on the journey, but otherwise we had a good sleep. I’ve seen lots of negative reports about the toilets. They were clean before we left Hanoi but there was a lot of ‘splashing’ from the westerners who had obviously had a few drinks before boarding. This is not the fault of Vietnamese railways! Top marks from us; we’re looking forward to our next journey.

I think for Vietnamese standards the train is okay but for someone from Holland the ride was very bumpy. I slept reasonably well. The door could be locked from the inside and all the lights could be turned off. It was quite hot and there were some mosquitos. The toilet started fine but it was dirty and full of urine splashes at the end (I think because of the bumpy and shaky ride).

Some other passengers occupied our seats and we have to keep the upper one. When they get off in the middle of the night, it was really noisy in the train.

The cabins were comfortable and clean. But please do not expect too much, it's an old train that doesn't move too fast and makes a lot of noise when it does. Not for fussy sleepers but we had a great overall experience.

The decoration in the train was classic and beautiful. The ventilation was ok. A bit bumpy, the birth was better than the train from South to North. The pillow and blanket liked clean. The toilet at the beginning of the journey was clean. The train officer had proposed the 16 seat from Loa Cai to Sapa at 50,000 VND (from the Loa Cai station direct to the hotel in Sapa)

It's not the highest standard ever, but the beds are clean, stuff is helpful and the train leaves and arrives on time. For this price 5/5

The whole cabin had an underlying toilet stench which took a long time to get used to (unfortunately the only option). The ride was too bumpy, I consider myself a deep sleeper and even I woke up 3-4 times at night, while some in our group weren't able to sleep at all. The AC didn't turn on for the first 3rd of the trp 2 starts only because it got us to sapa on time and the bed/pillow/sheets looked clean.

Bumpy ride. Couldn’t sleep much. And try to get the whole room to your bunch as staying with a snoring person all night would also cut your sleep quality.

A bit expensive than actual price but it makes sure that I will have a lower bed. The train departs exactly on time. No whistle of the train during at night, doesn't like day train. So you can sleep easier. I got coach no. 1 which is the oldest coach of the train, but it is just old, not difference much than the other coaches.

The "rooms" are clean and the bed is comfortable enough to take a rest after a long walking day in Hanoi. There is a restroom and they sell drinks on board, just wasted and beer but it's enough, I would recommend to bring your own food, we paid for 2nd class sleeper so 23 USD. There are power outlets to charge your devices

We booked the 1st class sleeper train and as far as I can see, apart from the carriage itself, everything looked like we booked a tourist cabin. We even had complimentary water, snacks and tissues. It seemed like pillow cases and sheets were fresh but not sure about the duvet though. It was a very pleasant ride and slept well. Toilets were clean enough. There was hot water and toilet paper. So overall worth 4 stars! Will do this again soon!

All in all, the ride was okay. The train station was easy to find and my friend and me had a cabin for ourselves. However the beds were uncomfortable and the train was shaking during the whole drive. In the middle of the ride a lady came to us and offered us a shuttle from Lao Cai to Sapa for 50 k each. She said we had to pay immediately and we trusted her because she was wearing a uniform of the train company. She only gave us a business card of a shuttle company but no tickets. When we arrived at Lao Cai, the driver from that company said we had to pay again because he couldn't find the lady. So we paid again which was not fair because we had already paid in the train!
