BangkokTo Chiang Mai Aug 24, 2019

Departure: Saturday, August 24, 2019 18:10 from Hua Lamphong, Bangkok

Arrival: Sunday, August 25, 2019 07:15 to Chiang Mai

Duration: 13h 5m

Class: 1st Class Sleeper

Facilities and services: Aircon, Steward, WC

Confirmation: Operator uses manual confirmation. Ticket confirmation may take up to 24 hours.

Cancellation: Cancelation possible (check rules)

Dear Railways Passenger!
We are not (yet) an online system for Thai Railways. We are manually buying tickets for you at the station. Trains in Thailand are usually sold out (especially VIP class compartments). It may happen that your preferred berth (upper or lower) is not available. In this case we can try to get a different berth for you. You may select your flexibility level below.

You can not travel with the voucher you got from us. You need to come and check in to collect your boarding passes. The process is very similar to the one you know from the airport. You can not board the train without a special boarding pass.

Why book with us?

  • Simple and seamless booking process.
  • Usually we confirm your tickets within 24h.
  • Ticket pickup at/near the departure station in Bangkok with an alternative shipping option to the parcel room at your departure station or by EMS to your home/hotel address.
  • It is possible to change the passport details after making the purchase.
  • Multiple refund/change/shipping options nobody else can provide for you. Changing a boarding pass costs 160 Baht extra (fee per person).

Our booking fee is there to cover costs for providing tickets to our customers. This involves our staff going to the railways counter, wait in the queue and arrange the best tickets for you, depending on availability and according to your requirements and much much more. The purchasing process of train tickets is different to our bus tickets, which are instantly confirmed - bus operator systems are connected in real-time. Trains are not like that. In case we have charged a higher price at the moment of booking (for child fares, changing VIP to 2nd Class, upper/lower, etc.) we refund in cash when you pick up tickets.

Please note: Thai railways release seats to the public 90 days before the departure for long-hauls and 30 days for short routes (e.g. Bangkok <-> Chumphon). If your departure is in more than 90 (30) days your payment and request will be held in the system and we issue tickets at first possibility ensuring you get the seats you want.

Attention: Please enter your real gender when booking. If you have mentioned you are female and book 1st Class/VIP, we'll put you with another female passenger. If in reality you are not exactly female - you may face well expected difficulties when boarding...

Travel with children: Please note that the policy of Thai Railways permits children less than 12 years old or of height under 150cm to travel on LOWER BERTHS ONLY.

Starting from November 11, 2016 the SRT has used new train carriages.
Each first-class seat is equipped with a TV screen, electric outlet (220V) and a USB slot for battery recharging. The train also includes dining car, wheelchair elevators, airplane-style vacuum toilets, surveillance cameras, opened door alarms.

Cancelation policy: Bangkok - Chiang Mai #9

The following refund options are available:

  1. Refund 80% (excl. fees)

If you would like to cancel your booking before the ticket is confirmed.

Amount to be refunded: USD 42.79

  2. Refund 50% (excl. fees)

We travelled in a first class cabin from Bangkok - Chiang Mai. Comfy bed (as sleeper trains go), good food, decent amount of space and we arrived on time. Friendly staff too. A good trip.

Prima trip. 1ste class reizen heerlijk. Ben je met meer, de deur tussen twee coupe’s kan open. Krijgt water en je bed wordt opgemaakt. Douche aan board. Slapen is wel lastig wanneer de trein steeds beweegt. Gewoon een leuke ervaring.

Train 9 is fantastic. We had inter connecting rooms with the kids in the 1st class carriage. Really clean and staff are lovely. Two tips.... Get on train at least 30 mins before departure and have a shower and get in to some clean clothes, best thing ever. Nothing is free on the train so be prepared. We ate before departure from the noodle place opposite station and took our own nibbles. If you are a light sleeper don’t expect to much sleep. It’s more about the experience I would say

The train is spotlessly clean, quiet and smooth. The staff are very polite and facilities are better than on what you get on a plane - the shower is amazing. There are a few things which prevent me scoring it top marks. The A/C is cold and not adjustable. And to this the thin blankets they issue you with and your in for a cold sleep. Secondly the food onboard is both tasteless and expensive. We spent £28 on dinner & breakfast and basically through it in the bin. With the few downsides I’d book up again tomorrow.

Great sleeper train. Dress warm as air conditioning gets cold overnight. Skip the paid breakfast. Instead walk to the food car and grab a muffin or something. Bought dinner at the food court before boarding so can’t speak to dinner but it’s not cheap. WiFi is spotty but definitely the best train I’ve ridden on in a long time

train #9 VIP Sleeper, Thai Railways, Apr 19, 2019
The overnight train ride on train no. 9 was quite enjoyable, especially since I had the cabin to myself however unintentional. I only paid for the lower berth in a first class cabin, the upper berth went unclaimed. Falling asleep was easy, staying asleep was harder with the motion and noise in the train. The walls between cabins are also quite thin so you’ll hear your neighbors more so than on American or Canadian sleepers. The provided blanket is thin but very warm. The ac vent in the cabin gets real cold but is adjustable. The pillow isn’t as firm as I like, had to put a towel underneath to make it more comfortable. Shouldn’t be an issue for anyone traveling with their own neck pillow or similar. But I still feel pretty refreshed this morning. My car was the very last car of the set so I didn’t hear any whistling if they do that here like Amtrak does every 15 seconds. Most of the ride was in darkness so not a whole lot of scenery to take in. As far as shared facilities go, in the first class car they’re comparable to American or Canadian sleeping cars in terms of function and cleanliness, no stinky hole in the floor here. The cabin attendants were friendly enough. I had no issues with the food purchased on board, which I opted for instead of bringing onboard instant noodles or other snacks from a 7-Eleven.

I'm glad we did this for the experience but... Didn't get any sleep as the beds are so hard. Got into Chiang Mai tired and grumpy. Next time I'll fly. The staff were great and friendly. We ordered food to be brought to our cabin, food is OK, not great and a bit expensive.

We took the overnight train, this is a very efficient way to travel as we had a full day of activities in Bangkok before leaving and full day of activities in Chiang Mai on the day we arrived and didn’t need to pay for accommodation that night. We were a bit worried about the train food and couldn’t find anything to bring with us at the train station, but the food on the train was really nice. Catering staff will come and take your order, they like you to order lots as they get commission. The dim sum was really nice! If you don’t order, you can always order later in the shop towards the centre of the train. We spent just over 1000 baht on a light dinner and breakfast, which is probably double the price that we would have paid elsewhere but we were happy with everything.

The booking system was first class. However the journey itself was bumpy, jolty and made sleeping pretty much impossible. We arrived in Chiang Mao wishing we had bought a flight. Train was late by an hour, but that meant we saw much more of the countryside, which was a bonus. Staff were great. Service impeccable. Clean facilities.

Good overnight trip with Thai Rail from Bangkok Hua Lamphong to Chiang Mai in 1st class sleeper carriage. Upper berth not as comfortable as lower berth as not possible to sit upright. Once upper berth is folded away, plenty of space in cabin. Food is not included in ticket price, but available at decent quality with rather high pricing.

As an American, I would say this over night journey was 3/5 stars. The beds you sleep on in first class are harder than rocks (which I have come to find out this is pretty normal in Thailand to have very very hard beds). The pillows were as flat as can be. I actually decided to sleep on top of my clothes to help prop my head up. The train itself is extremely loud and freezing cold. I packed ear plugs and a sleeping mask and that was the only way I could get some rest. Luckily I had nausea medicine as well because the movement of the train was almost unbearable. On the bright side, the 12Go staff were very very kind. The train was very clean and even had a clean shower (first class). I chose not to eat the food because of the other reviews, so I have no opinion on the food. I think if you’re used to the “American way” of things, it may be best to spend the extra money on a plane ticket to get to Chiang Mai.

Our trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in a first class sleeper was just OK. Getting to the 12Go.Asia office acoss the street from the train station was no easy task because of the many lanes of traffic. The 12Go.Asia staff was very unfriendly. The first class cabin was cramped but adequate. The train food attendant was very pushy in offering juice and fruit without mentioning that there was a fee. While it wasn't the trains fault, we had kids screaming 2 cabins down before we asked the train attendant to say something to the parents. It was an adventure, but we wont do it again.

It was abit of an adventure getting the overnight train to Chiang Mai. A modern clean train which was kept clean throughout the journey. Tje 1st vlass cabib was relatively spacious. The hardest thing for me was sleeping on the top bunk - I had underestimated the sway on the top bunk which made me feel slightly nauseous. But so glad we did it - well done Thai Railways we arrivrd in CM exactly on schedule

The organization around picking up our tickets was flawless as always. Boarding the train went smoothly, and the food was better than expected. However, even with the ac as low as we could get it, the upper bunk was freezing. Be sure to wrap up warm if you are heading there. We arrived pretty much on time. 12go asia staff very good. We requested 1st class tickets months ago. 12go confirmed they had got our tickets as soon as they could purchase them. Then informed us where to go to collect them on our day of travel, this was easy after following their instructions. Very happy with how easy and efficient it was booking through them. We had a 1st class cabin on a number 9 train, which was one of the newer trains. Very nice and clean. Allowed to board train early. Staff very nice, turned the seats into beds and informed us where toilets/shower was and when they would be back in the morning to change beds back into the seats. Staff do come around offering orange juice, diner and breakfast but we didn't take this as already read that it was very expensive and not the best. Would definitely use 12go asia again and definitely travel on this journey again should the opportunity arise.

12go.asia was perfect. I ordered tickets half a year ago and they started to remember and instruct me about two weeks before the trip. Picking up the tickets in the office on the day of travelling was easily. Train was new with good comfort. Cabin was ok and we had some sleep. Be aware that they offer drinks in the train when arriving, they are not for free. There is also a menu card for diner and breakfast. It was prompt, like airflight food and not cheap. at easily
