How to get from Siem Reap to Bangkok

There are a lot of private operators offering Siem Reap–Bangkok tickets virtually at every corner in Siem Reap. Sometimes tickets from Siem Reap to Bangkok or Pattaya are sold at as low as USD15. While travelling with these operators you will definitely reach your destination, be aware, though, that your journey may last much longer than expected due to that usual Cambodian perception of ‘good service’. What you will have is likely to be a worn out bus with extremely limited luggage space – actually backpacks and suitcases are piled right in the aisle. Even if nowadays the road between Siem Reap and Poipet boasts quite a decent roadway covering, these buses tend to spend from four to five hours instead of two to reach the border as they call in at a number of souvenir shops and cafes on their way in a hope to wheedle some dollars out of your pockets. No use in arguing, just take it for granted that your journey will be a long one.

Another inconvenient moment is that you have to change the bus at the Thai side after having gone through all the border formalities. If there are enough people for a big bus, you will travel with much more comfort. Sometimes they use a minibus instead which is a bit less pleasant as drivers of minibuses – God knows why – are notorious for their mad speedy driving, so a ride from the border to the capital is not for a faint-hearted. Leg and luggage space is limited in a minibus, too.

There is a direct international bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok operated by Siem Reap Transport Co. It leaves daily at 8am from the office of Nattakan Cambodia Co., Ltd. (22 Sivatha Road). They provide VIP buses which are generally in good condition, but note that there is not too much leg space for a Western traveller. Otherwise buses are quite comfortable, there is a toilet on board and two meals – a small breakfast and lunch – are served during the trip. Do not expect too much from your meals, though – breakfast is a muffin with orange juice or milk, and the lunchbox contains rice with some sort of a curry. International bus tickets from Siem Reap to Bangkok are more expensive than those from Bangkok to Siem Reap and cost THB1149. The main advantage of the international bus is that you do not need to change it at the border which is the case if you book two separate trips – from Siem Reap to Poipet and from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok. Travel time is about eight hours but sometimes the queues at the border crossing both at the Cambodian and Thai sides are endless, so be ready to sweat for a couple hours under the scorching sun. In Bangkok, the international bus arrives to the Northern bus terminal, Morchit, which is located at the northern outskirts of the city. It is linked with the centre of Bangkok by BTS and with both international airports of Bangkok by bus.

As mentioned above, you can opt for two separate trips – from Siem Reap to the border (Poipet) and from the border (Aranyaprathet) to Bangkok. It may take a bit longer than if travelling by the international bus, but you can start from Siem Reap later that the international bus departs. The best way to get to Poipet is by a shared taxi (about USD40 per car). When on the Thai side, take a bus from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok. Aranyaprathet’s bus station is located 6 km from the border, so you will need a tuk-tuk to get there after you have got your permission to enter Thailand. There is also a Rong Klua Market bus station right by the border. Aran bus company offers both express and VIP24 buses from the Aranyaprathet and Rong Klua Market bus stations heading to Bangkok throughout the day. Tickets cost from THB238 to THB254, travel time to Bangkok is from 3½ hours to 5¼ hours. Buses arrive to Morchit, the Northern Bus Terminal.

Tip: Poipet–Aranyaprathet border crossing is open daily from 7am till 10pm, but if you are going to take a bus to Bangkok from Aranyaprathet the same day, note that you have to arrive to the Rong Klua Market bus station by 5pm or to the city bus station by 5.30pm. Otherwise you will have to sleep in Aranyaprathet and continue your journey the next day.

Passenger reviews out of total 6,477 passengers who traveled with us on this route.

At 12Go our operators offer three types of service:

Cheap, Fast, Good - but you can usually pick only two of them!
Cheap & Fast won’t be Good. (e.g. buses from/to Khao San Road, local buses or 3rd class trains)
Cheap & Good won’t be Fast. (e.g. VIP trains in Thailand)
Fast & Good won’t be Cheap. (e.g. private limousine services, or VIP24 buses vs Express buses)

Make your choice! Please remember that while we are closely monitoring the services, we are still an agency marketplace. That means we focus on ticketing services and route availability & coverage rather than on the factual seat reclining angle you will get on the bus today.

I've heard so much about the scams happening in the Poipet, Cambodia border that's why I booked with Giant Ibis because they said that they are the only direct bus to and from Bangkok and indeed it is true. Loved the bus trip ???? We did not leave the bus to exit Cambodia because our guide did that for us. We walked together going to the Thai Immigration and we made it through fast because there were only few foreigners crossing the border. The bus also made one stop in Cambodia and one in Thailand for restroom break. They were only few of us in the bus making it comfy and my bus mates are the best.

In my reservation and ticket from busbuds.com, the bus was supposed to leave Siem Reap at 8am, but we left at 9am instead. I also booked a ticket for a "VIP" class, but while the bus drivers are courteous, the service wasn't really VIP. When we arrived at the border immigration in Poi Pet, we were asked to get off the bus and was pointed out to a building. No explanation as to what's going on, what's gonna happen, or where will we board the bus again. The other foreigners and I were asking among our selves if we are already at the border. We simply followed one of the drivers and it's only when we got inside the building that we confirmed we were indeed already at the border. We lined up for our exit stamp and I was expecting one from the bus company to be waiting for the passengers outside the building. But there was none. Now, the Poi Pet- Aranyaphratet border isn't exactly a well guided border. There are no signs! There was a simple "Walk to Thailand. 200m" sign at the exit of the Cambodian Immigration and that's it. Walking to the direction of the "walk to Thailand, 200m" arrow, you'll come to a space that is entirely unmarked. There's a wide road with big hotels on each side, and an open market after the hotels. Absolutely no idea where the hell is the Thailand border immigration. And signing up for a 'VIP' bus service, I was expecting someone to at least be directing the passengers. I had to walk back to the Cambodian border before meeting up with two other foreigners and decided to walk with them to find where the hell is the Thai immigration. We got lost, of course. Was directed by one passerby and yet again, we were on the wrong side of the road for the entrance. Upon clearance from the Thai Immigration, I went down the building and came out to a road that is completely chaotic. The bus ID that was given to the passenger has a rather not clear instruction on where to find the bus. The listing for this bus says bottled water and snack will be provided but all throughout the trip from Siem Reap to Poi Pet, no bottle of water was given. After passing through the gritty border immigration and walking under the sweltering heat , still no bottled water given. The bus picked up an order of packed food ffrom a 7-11 joint in Aranyapratet and was distributed to the passengers. Well, I would commend the company for a hot food. However, I was expecting that after the packed fried rice with shrimp was given out, they would hand out bottled water next. But nothing. After 10 minutes, I couldn't take it anymore and I got up to ask for a bottle of water. That's when they only seem to remember that they haven't given out any since leaving Cambodia. And again, I was expecting cold water. But lo and behold, we had to momentarily stop to get the bunch of bottled water from the bus compartment. It certainly wasn't a 'VIP', just a usual bus ride.

Since I’ve been hearing a lot of stories about scams on buses to Cambodia, I really had a difficult time to choose which bus company to trust. So, I asked our tourist guide’s opinion in Cambodia and he recommended Giant Ibis. Fortunately, there was no problem encountered on this bus. The staffs were knowledgeable in English and possesses good character. They guided us through the Thailand and Cambodian borders and advised us what to do. The only downside is that there is no toilet onboard. But luckily, there is a stopover before the Thai borders and during the passport processing so you’ll get the chance to visit the toilet if needed. All-in-all, this is a very reliable and comfortable bus to Cambodia. ❤️

The trip was smooth and the bus seats were comfortable. The crew and guide was kind and accomodating with all passengers. He also explained that we needed to change buses so we should bring all our hand carry belongings and the crew will handle the heavier bags in the luggage compartment. He waited for the group to pass through immigation of both Cambodia and Thailand. He was also very patient with a co-passenger who left their bag on the Cambodian bus and tried to get it back to them (though that caused almost an hour delay to the trip). There were no powerpoints to charge your devices or internet but that didn't really bother me. They also provide water, snacks and a simple lunch which was quite tasty, and good as this bus doesn't make any stops except to pass through immigration. We had a bit of a hold up as one of the passengers got stuck at the Thai border and we had to wait quite a bit longer than anticipated. This bus doesn't offer a group service as Giant Ibis does, so we all had to pass through immigration alone and regroup on the Thai side of the border. This wasn't problematic for me personally, but if you're concerned about getting stuck as this traveller did, it might be best to go with a different company.

This shouldn't happen to a luxurious class bus like Giant Ibis. The only pro was the staff, named Chann Sophriates (if I'm not mistaken), he is more likely a tour guide than a bus attendant. He informed us about almost everything, he also informed us about the immigration of Cambodian departure staffs that usually ask for money so that we got prepared when it was really happening. 5-stars for Chann's service. Lunch and breakfast on board are delicious!

At the border there is no clear indication to go to the thai immigration side. Overall good service as luggages are keep in the bus while you do the immigration checks.

Left on time & pick up from hotel was good. Baggage tagged & they helped us negotiate the borders both Cambodian & Thai although the queues were bad?. Because if this and then an unscheduled stop at the airport to drop some people off we eventually arrived after 6pm. Wi-Fi was bad so we struggled with directions once we arrived in Bangkok.

Best bus I have been on in S.E. Asia. Big bus and there was only 5 of us on it most of the time. Was given a choc chip muffin, water, and iced coffee can when we got on. Chairs were comfortable and plenty of space. Boarder was a bit confusing as no instructions but just follow everyone else and then the driver waits for you at the other end a takes you back to bus. We packed a lunch, just ate it all then found lunch was provided! So had a really yum hot second lunch on the bus of fried rice and vegetables. Clean bus with good air con and a working toilet that we could use. Highly reccomend. Nice drivers.

Wifi didn't work, air con was crap, guide suddenly couldn't speak English when we got to Bangkok and had no idea where to go because we couldn't use the wifi on the bus to sort it out. Took 10hrs not 8. Lunch was just rice, not very big.

My wife had an accident on our way to Bangkok, so we had to go to a hospital. The bus personnel made it possible that she stayed in the bus at the border, and after that, the tourist police of Thailand brought her to the hospital. The bus waited 1 1/2 hour for us. When we arrived in Bangkok they gave us the 1.000bath we payed in the hospital back! Super!
