How to get from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon

With Yangon sitting around 2,200 km north of Kuala Lumpur, the most sensible way to travel between the two is to fly. Since several overland crossings between Myanmar and neighbouring countries have been open to foreign travellers, an overland journey is also possible – you will have to travel via Thailand and will be able to organise great detours to the Thai islands to enhance your travel experience.

From Kuala Lumpur to Yangon by direct flight

At the moment three airline companies have daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Yangon. Flying with either of them takes about 2¾ hours. The most budget-friendly one is AirAsia with tickets just under USD50 one-way (checked-in luggage excluded). Both Malaysia Airlines and Myanmar Airways International offer slightly more expensive alternative starting from USD70 one-way.

In Kuala Lumpur, all flights depart from Kuala Lumpur International airport (KLIA). Myanmar Airways and Malaysia Airlines operate from the satellite terminal. To get there, you have to take the Aerotrain from the main building. AirAsia uses KLIA2, the low-cost carrier terminal of KLIA, as their hub.

In Yangon, Yangon International airport lies 17 km north from the Central Railway Station. It is not served by public transport – in the sense that no bus or train comes right up to the terminal building, but you still can get to the city by bus or train though some walking or a short ride is necessary. Bus N51 goes from Sel Maing Kone bus stop to Suli Paya. The bus stop is about 2.5 km from the terminal building. A ride costs MMK200 or MMK300 only. The closest to the airport circular train station, Pa Ywet Seik Kone, is about 2 km far. The train costs MMK100 and brings you to the Central Railway station. The official taxi rate from the airport is MMK8.000/USD8.

From Kuala Lumpur to Yangon by connecting flights

If by some reason you cannot or do not want to take a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon, you can always consider connecting via Bangkok. There are a couple of dozens daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok with the best deals offered by AirAsia and Lion Air – both fly to Don Mueang airport in Bangkok (from USD30). Wish you connect via Suvarnabhumi airport, check Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways. Airfare of the former starts from USD50 one-way, while plusher Thai Airways are significantly more expensive.

From Don Mueang hop onto an AirAsia, Lion Air or Nok Air flight to Yangon. Flying time is less then one and a half hour, with Lion Air often being the cheapest option. Thai Airways, Bangkok Air and Myanmar Airways fly to Yangon from Suvarnabhumi airport and are more expensive (Myanmar Airways tickets start from USD80; tickets of the both Thai airlines – from USD170).

Another option is to travel via Chiang Mai. There are direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Chiang Mai (2¾ hours; from USD40) operated by AirAsia and Malindo Air. In Chiang Mai connect to Myanmar-based Myanmar Airways and Air KBZ or Thai-based Bangkok Airways flying from Chiang Mai to Yangon (from one hour to 1h 20m). Neither is cheap – expect to pay from USD200 one-way, but Bangkok Airways have some great web promotions so if you are lucky enough to grab one of them you may fly from Chiang Mai to Yangon for around USD40.

Tip Before buying connecting flight tickets, check Thailand visa requirements for your passport. You will need two separate tickets from Malaysia to Thailand and from Thailand to Myanmar meaning that you will need to go through Thai immigration on arrival to Bangkok or Chiang Mai and technically enter the country even if your connecting flight to Myanmar is in just a couple of hours.

From Kuala Lumpur to Yangon overland

Travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon overland makes for a great journey, which will encompass three countries – Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar. With a great network of buses and trains both in Malaysia and Thailand, and with the road from the border town of Myawaddy in Myanmar to Hpa-An recently paved, it is now easily done. Going overland will not save you any cent – it is going to be a long, costly trip, which will involve different means of transport and expenses on accommodation as even if you drive all way through from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon without stops, it will take you over 30 hours.

If this does not scare you off, we recommend including into your Malaysia part travel itinerary Ipoh, a ‘City of Millionaires’ boasting thriving food scene, beautiful examples of colonial architecture and an amazing Pangkor Island within an easy reach. A more well known Penang Island makes for a great stop, too. Though its beaches are just mediocre, intermingled traits of Malay, Indian, Chinese and European cultures make Penang a prime destination for city explorers.

Why go to Yangon

Till relatively recently Yangon has been the only gateway to the country for any international visitor. Now there are international flights to Mandalay and a number of border crossings with Thailand are open to foreigners, too. Yet the former capital of Myanmar, Yangon, remains a must-visit stop on every Burmese travel itinerary. A melting pot of cultures, Yangon experienced and absorbed British, Indian and Chinese influences. Their traces can be found in rich though dilapidating colonial architecture, leafy boulevards, busy markets and Burmese curries. One of the most exotic cities in South East Asia, Yangon conquers hearts with its colourful mix of golden pagodas, exotic garments of the locals and sincere smiles showing blood-red teeth busy with chewing betel nut. Though a couple of years ago a lot of restrictions concerning foreign tourists have been done away with and you will no longer get a compulsory Internet detox while visiting Yangon and the rest of the country, there are relatively few international visitors around. Visit now until it is too late!
