Kratie to Siem Reap

Kratie is a rural town in southeastern Cambodia. Though not heavily visited by tourists, the town sees a substantial number of backpackers who pass through during peak season. The distance between Kratie and Siem Reap is approximately 350 km on land if you travel via Stung Saen south of Siem Reap but the majority of traffic passes via Stung Treng and NR7, in the northeast, what makes the whole way 100 km longer. The road is relatively new and, therefore, in pretty good condition. There are daily minivans from Kratie to Siem Reap whose estimated travel time is 11 hours and 15 minutes. Buses from Kratie to Siem Reap

The bus station in Kratie is in the northwest part of town just above the market. While there are no commercial buses that travel directly from Kratie to Siem Reap, you will find minivans scheduled to serve this route each day.

Vans from Kratie to Siem Reap

Minivans are a much faster and cheaper way to get to Siem Reap from Kratie than the large commercially operated buses. They are, however, not as comfortable and can sometimes be overcrowded.

Asia Van Transfer is the primary operator that serves this route with tickets reasonably priced at USD24. They offer 12-person vans which depart Kratie AVT station at 7.30am each day and arrive in Siem Reap AVT station 11 hours and 15 minutes later at 6.45pm, unless there are delays on the road. Asia Van Transfer does not accept ticket cancellations or offer refunds, therefore, ensure that you check in at least 20 minutes before departure. Asia Van Transfer minivans come with comfortable seats and air conditioning. If you have huge luggage, you may have to buy an extra seat for it. There are no toilets on board, but you can use the bathroom when you make the stop in Stung Treng.

It is important to note that on your way to Siem Reap, you’ll have a stopover for several hours in Stung Treng, a small town in northeastern Cambodia that welcomes numerous tourists on their way to and from Laos. Here, you can explore the town's thriving market, use the bathroom, buy snacks and food, or just stretch your legs. You’ll then transfer to another van and resume your journey to Siem Reap. However, do not worry; the change-over is well organized.

From Kratie to Siem Reap by Taxi

You can get from Kratie to Siem Reap via a taxi that seats 1-4 people. You should set aside USD140 for this 5-hour trip. The taxis allow two large and two smaller suitcases. However, you'll be charged more for extra luggage and an additional USD5 during public holidays.

Minivans are less comfortable than buses, have less legroom and can sometimes get overcrowded. Also, you have to spend extra if you have huge luggage.

It takes longer to travel from Kratie to Siem Reap than the other way around (Siem Reap to Kratie) due to the layover in Stung Treng. It can be quite inconveniencing to have to wait a couple of hours to resume your journey and to move from one van to the next. However, you can get the most out of your layover by checking out the Mekong and Sekong rivers in Stung Treng or strolling the market. You are sure to find a souvenir or two that will remind you of your trip.
