Blogger report: Julia Rattke (High Speed Ferry Lomprayah) 08-Jul-2015 21:00

About half an hour before your bus is scheduled to leave (in my case it was at 20:30), you should be at the office at 327 Rambutri Road, รามบุตรี, Khwaeng Talat Yot, Khet Phra Nakhon, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10200, Thailand near Khao San Road. The Lomprayah office is in the curve of the street. In your booking confirmation email is also a map. This is their help hotline: +6626290011 and office hours are from 05:30- 22:00. Coming from the North you turn into this really busy street from the roundabout, between the 7/11 and the red sign of Swensen's. People with a lot of luggage may have some trouble getting through the night market. About 30 meters in, on the left side and right in the curve, is the Lomprayah office, slightly hidden behind a banner. Make sure to have your booking number on hand!

If you are on Khao San Road you have to find your way on the McDonald side of the road through the small alleys with all the shops to get to Rambutri Road.

At the office everything felt a bit rushed, one employee hands you your ticket and another a colored sticker with your seat number to put on your T-shirt and a color-coded sticker with the destination for your luggage. Make sure to tie that last one around a handle, it doesn't stick well. Then you sign in and someone will take your group to wait at the middle of the roundabout, behind the green sign, until the bus arrives.
The bus had only regular seats, so it is not a sleeper bus and the 8 hour drive will probably be a bit uncomfortable (especially if you were planning on actually getting some sleep). A travel pillow or a folded sarong helps a bit, and so do earplugs. The seats recline a little and blankets are provided. The bus is air-conditioned and has a toilet. I'm only 1.60 m, so I had plenty of leg space, but anyone taller than 1.90 m should expect some discomfort.

At 2:00 there was a 30 min break at a market with snack food. They also had a huge bathroom with clean toilets, but remember to bring toilet paper and flush with the bucket provided.

At 5:15 we arrived at the ferry pier, where the office was dark and still closed and we had to wait for almost 2 hours. There is a mini mart to the left, if you need anything while waiting, and on the opposite side is another array of clean toilets. The mini mart closes when the ferry opens for boarding, so do not plan on any last-minute shopping. When the info center on the right of the pier opens, you have to show your ticket for another sticker and to get a stamp. Around 7:00 people will start to line up for the "best" seats, but there was plenty of room for everyone, so I would not take it too seriously. After a short walk along the pier, you arrive at the boat. There are three seating areas: Downstairs (inside), in the middle (outside with sun roof) and on the top (outside without cover). I chose the middle and it was perfectly fine.

About 2,5 hours (of comparatively smooth sailing) later we arrived at Ko Nang Yuan to let some people on and off the boat and then turned towards the Lomprayah Pier on Ko Tao, where we arrived 5 minutes later.
From here on it is really easy: Get off the boat, grab your luggage and find your pick up or taxi at the end of the pier. Congrats, you have made it to Ko Tao! Enjoy your stay!

Ferry got cancelled without prior notice. You arrive at the bus and they just say sorry and that you have to wait at the pier for 8h for the next ferry. There will be no compensation a voucher for a coffee or similar at the pier.. Additionally we found by ourselfs a ferry ride from a different company with which we had to pay additional 500 baht. In my opinion they could had at least inform the passengers that such an alternative EXISTS instead of just letting you wait for half a day at that boring pier. Can not recommend - the service is bad. Also for me personally the bus was really cold so always put on a lot of layers..

Good value for money! The bus ride was overall comfortable. We departed on time and got to the Ferry station at around 5:30. The ferry departed at 7 so it was an hour and half wait, not too bad, as other combinations will take longer. The one thing to keep in mind in Bangkok is that you have to go to the office to get the bus ticket before boarding the bus, regardless of whether your print it or not. Just bear this in mind as the office it's 300 meters from where the bus actually departs.

Overall, I was comfortable for the whole journey and reached my destination on time However the train left 2 hours late with no warning or reason. Despite this the train was very comfortable and I slept well. But watch out! The train ticket is probably booked to Surat Thani which is not the stop you need to get off at (ChumPhon) so tell the train staff this and they will make sure they warn you before the stop otherwise there is no way of knowing where you are... I followed the train on maps.me so I knew when the right stop was but otherwise I would probably end up in Surat Thani. Even though the train was late to arrive the bus transfer waited for us and was quick to the ferry meaning that we got off the bus straight onto the ferry so there was no waiting around on the other side. Arrived at koh tao 30 min early!

Easy booking, very comfortable bus and good service stop with great food offerings. Good food options at the port whilst waiting for the boat too. Boat was comfortable and good crossing, staff we very helpful and informative when we had to return to port with a technical difficulty and wait for it to be fixed, which was done within one hour and we got to the island in good time. I would use again and highly recommend.

Having done the trip before I knew what to expect, which definitely makes the journey less stressfull. You won't get much sleep so start sleeping asap. At around 0.30 am you make a 40 min food stop and you can't stay in the bus. Than it is very likely some of the people change bus, which wakes you up again, most likely confusing everyone of who has to get out and who doesn't. Just ask if unsure. Than you likely arrive at around 3am at the pier (unless the bus brakes down) where you have to leave the bus, despite it stays there for another few hours. It would be nice if you could stay inside and get some sleep. You wait until 7am for the ferry, where you can get some sleep when it's not too busy. I always make sure I find a place on Koh Tao in advance where I can check in at 10am and go straight to bed. But that's totally up to you. That said, the guys from the bus and the ferry where super nice and friendly, you can choose your own seats in the bus, get a blanket, toilet was ok, and my seat wasn't broken. The one in front of me though was. So try not be the last person getting on the bus. It's quite all right when you know what to expect and you will spend less hours in the bus than it first looks like.

The problem was the smelly toilet from the bus. The door wasn't closing properly and all the time the bad smell went out

Avoid seats no 25 and 26, there is no leg room at all, we had 1 hour delay but we arrived 1 hour earlier than scheduled, I dont know how is it possible but i guess its a Thai magic. We had 30min break after 4 hours ride, we have got blankets so it was not that cold. If not the seats I would give 4 stars.

Nos fue bien. Lo único fue que al reclamar los tiquetes del tren nos dijeron que a las 4 debíamos estar despiertos porque era nuestra parada. Sin embargo, gracias a que teníamos GPS no nos bajamos sino hasta las 6:30.

Boarding was prompt, bit of a wait to depart, rest stop was well chosen, bus and catamaran was air conditioned and they provided blankets.

C’est assez mal organisé, l’enregistrement se fait avec des gens pas très sympas et les sièges des bus ne sont pas très confortables. En synthèse ça fait le job faute de mieux.

All in all, it was fine. The coach was pretty comfortable, we were all given a blanket, we got to the catamaran terminal on time and the boat trip was fine though a bit choppy (not anyone’s fault). The criticism for me is the office where we sort of had to guess what to do. We were told there were two buses 8.30 & 9.00 and some people should come back at 8.00. It was just pointlessly confusing and could Have been done better, particularly as they seem to do it every day. I would’ve given another star if they’d just been a bit friendlier. This is for the bus company. 12_Go Asia were simple and easy to use, no problems there at all.

train #85.2 2nd Class Sleeper AC, Thai Railways, Oct 14, 2019
Everything was very organized from 12Go. We arrived to the train station very late, and they had everything ready to go! Train left on time. Very friendly and helpful train staff-- offering food, setting up beds, smiling and chatty. However, it was very unclear when we were supposed to get off the train, and almost missed our off-stop. Train ran approx 1hr behind schedule due to construction nearby the tracks (as we were told), so everything was rushed on the arrival end catching our next transport/connections. The rest of the trip was somewhat rushed, but smooth. Squat toilets on the trains. Bottom berths are a bit roomier than the upper berths, and have a window. Pillows with clean sheets and blankets are provided.
