How to get from Hanoi to Sapa
There are two major ways to travel from Hanoi to Sapa, namely by train or by bus.

There is no airport in the region, so your choice is limited to overland means of transportation.

Train

The overnight railway route to Sapa is one of the most popular routes in the country. It is operated both by ordinary Vietnamese Railway carriages and more luxurious private trains which offer both a more expensive and more comfortable alternative.

Trains operate between Hanoi and Lao Cai station, about 35 km from Sapa. If travelling by train, you will then need to hire a taxi or jump onto a bus to cover this final leg.

Train tickets sell out quickly, so it is a good idea to book your ticket online as early as possible if you have travel dates fixed.

Bus

Hanoi to Sapa bus companies often offer pickup from the Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake. Buses of some companies depart from the Old Quarter. In Sapa, they bring passengers to different location around town.

Buses make multiple trips per day between Hanoi and Sapa. They take the fastest time to get from Hanoi to Sapa and are very budget-friendly but not always that comfortable.

Buses offer the widest choice of departure time throughout the day, too.

First class sleepers in Vietnam Railways trains start at USD20-25 for a berth in a closed compartment for four passengers.

Luxury private trains that are essentially separate carriages attached to the same Vietnam Railways train, offer private compartments for two (first class sleeper) or four passengers (VIP sleeper).

Awful... made me pay for the whole cabin and at my arrival I can’t even get to choose which bed I want to sleep in. The train is noisy and not comfortable at all! They don’t listen to what you want to explain because they simply don’t care! Avoid the train and take a 20-seats bus, it’s cheaper and much more comfortable! For me, never again!!!!

Excellent service the only downfall was the very windy road to sapa ( unavoidable) and tourists who were 50 minutes late when we were departing from Sapa . Out of the control of the company . Mr. Flowers and Aurora very good hosts and driver !

Train was very noisy, didnt sleep at all! We were lucky the 2 other people from the same cabin didnt came so we were alone. Its not clear where the top or bottom numbers are because on the outside of the cabin they display it differently then inside. Aircondiditioning was working so we were lucky i gues. Toilets were discusting and nasty

No one else booked the cabin, but I was asked to pay first 300,000 Dong, then 200,000, then 150.000 to be alone when actually no one booked. After I disagreed the guy working in the train came back trying to sell a transfer from the train station to sapa town. Very uncomfortable as a woman solo traveler!! The train is not comfortable either, stops very strong

Beds are comfy enough - after all you’re only there to sleep- and the train ran on time. Staff not so helpful and poor level of English. Don’t use the toilet unless you’re desperate.

Bus VIP 20, Sapa Express, Oct 29, 2019
Really nice bus, good tour guide but could have spoken louder for those at the back of the bus. Outside of windows could be cleaned for nicer view to appreciate the journey more. The roads are very bendy at the end and the driver could have gone a little slower and not overtaken on the bends.

train #SP1 1st Class Sleeper, Vietnam Railways, Oct 28, 2019
Booking process and support from 12go Asia was great. No complications whatsoever and even had the 4 berth cabin to ourselves. The train itself is fine, beds are pretty hard but it’s a given you aren’t going to get a great nights sleep anyway. Bedding and cabin was clean and didn’t see any cockroaches or rats as others have said. The toilet wasn’t great, pretty smelly and not overly clean but fine. Would recommend for the price!

The train is good and well lit. As it's meter gauge, there's lot of swaying. But the train is fast enough it travels at about 50-60kph.

Driving dangerous. Drivers are rude. On our way back they menace to throw our luggage and not get us back to hanoi because we refused to change seats (on the ticket puts first come first seat we came the first and they shouted at us and threat us saying we won’t travel unless we chaged seats). Rude and agressive people.

We were on time 7:15 (pick up 7:30) bus was already gone and we had to wait. We needed to go in the back, we did not get any option. No eating allowed which I can understand. We arrived at a break point and driver suddenly got out and left, did not tell us how long the break would be. Driving like crazy in the mountains and almost made an accident. He did ask us were our hotel was and dropped us off so that was really nice.

Cabin was really nice; we had a good sleep. Only thing: the toilet was really smelly and dirty even at the start and also the cabin was not cleaned very good: there was dirt under the bed.. therefor only 4 stars and not 5..
