How to get to Sapa from Hanoi

How to get from Hanoi to Sapa
There are two major ways to travel from Hanoi to Sapa, namely by train or by bus.

There is no airport in the region, so your choice is limited to overland means of transportation.

Train

The overnight railway route to Sapa is one of the most popular routes in the country. It is operated both by ordinary Vietnamese Railway carriages and more luxurious private trains which offer both a more expensive and more comfortable alternative.

Trains operate between Hanoi and Lao Cai station, about 35 km from Sapa. If travelling by train, you will then need to hire a taxi or jump onto a bus to cover this final leg.

Train tickets sell out quickly, so it is a good idea to book your ticket online as early as possible if you have travel dates fixed.

Bus

Hanoi to Sapa bus companies often offer pickup from the Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake. Buses of some companies depart from the Old Quarter. In Sapa, they bring passengers to different location around town.

Buses make multiple trips per day between Hanoi and Sapa. They take the fastest time to get from Hanoi to Sapa and are very budget-friendly but not always that comfortable.

Buses offer the widest choice of departure time throughout the day, too.

How far is from Hanoi to Sapa?

The overland distance from Hanoi to Sapa is 315 km. Sapa is located northwest of the capital in the mountainous area of Lao Cai province.

How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Sapa?

Hanoi to Sapa travel time normally lies within five and a half and 9 hours range. Buses travel faster, while trains are slower, require a taxi or a shuttle bus ride to cover the final leg of the journey but offer more comfort.

Trains normally need from seven and a half to eight and a half hours to reach Lao Cai. From Lao Cai train station, it is another hour–90 minutes to Sapa by taxi or public shuttle bus.

If travelling from Hanoi to Sapa by bus, duration of your trip is likely to be between five and a half and seven and a half hours.

How much does it cost to get from Hanoi to Sapa?

Ticket prices from Hanoi to Sapa differ greatly depending on the means of transport and the class of your travel.

Ordinary or semi-sleeper buses cost USD12-USD14. They feature three rows of soft berth instead of seats where you can only lie but not sit.

VIP buses offer soft reclining seats and enough legroom. These ones are more expensive: be ready to pay between USD16 and USD20 per seat.

First class sleepers in Vietnam Railways trains start at USD20-25 for a berth in a closed compartment for four passengers.

Luxury private trains that are essentially separate carriages attached to the same Vietnam Railways train, offer private compartments for two (first class sleeper) or four passengers (VIP sleeper).

For a first class sleeper, you’ll need to shell out about USD35-USD40. A VIP sleeper will set you back about USD70 and USD80 in media, though some companies, e.g. Victoria Express, charge twice as much for both options.

I requested a bottom bunk but I guess due to high demand I was placed on the top bunk. There was initial concern both about how I was going to get up and how I was going to not drop out during the ride. I could see getting up being tricky if you’re smaller or don’t have any arm strength, it was a little difficult in the middle of the night half asleep. Although my shorter (5’5) roommate managed to get up to her bunk with little effort - so maybe I’m wrong. I was presently surprised with the comfort of the beds. Despite there being minimal precautions to keep you in the bunk whilst the train is moving there was little risk of falling out. You can feel the train moving obviously but it wasn’t particularly jerky. If you’re over 180cm you’re probably the size of the bed or bigger, as I was. Honestly though it wasn’t a real issue, I was able to curl slightly and get a good nights sleep. The staff were incredibly helpful and even gave us a wake up call in the morning and brought round free tea and coffee. As far as overnight transport goes this was probably the best nights sleep I have had on a bus/train/plane. I saw some comments about the toilet state, they weren’t the prettiest by about half way through the night, but no different to any other long haul journey. Toilets always get gross in these situations.

The train was on time. We weren't able to sleep because the air was really bad, the train was super loud and totally shaky. We felt a little a seasick from time to time. If you're taller than 1,60m you'll be struggeling with the size of the bed. They are short, tightly and not really comfortable. It was a funny adventure but not relaxing or something.

We read reviews on the best ways to travel to Sapa from Hanoi and most suggested taking the night train. If you are looking for comfort, we highly recommend other options. However, if you are looking for an experience to later laugh about, try the night train. We booked our tickets with Sapaly Express while we were still in the states. Luckily we had a printed copy of our confirmation because there is no ticket counter. We had a hard time finding the location to pick up our boarding pass. We asked a random guy sitting next to a snack vendor for help and it turned out he was Sapaly person holding our boarding pass. If you thought wasn’t hard enough, we were then directed to walk around the train station to board our train. It was a good 10 minute walk thru a dimly light street. As an FYI, we discovered there is an over-path in the station after we returned. We booked the full birth(2 bottom and 2 top bulks). The mattress is thin and the rail on the top bulks didn’t provide a lot comfort. I was terrified of falling in the middle of the night. The birth comes with crackers, water and toothbrush. We were offered coffee in the morning without additional charge. We didn’t mind the noise from the train ride, but it felt like we were being shucked like toys. At one point in the middle of the night, the train came to a sudden stop with all the doors sliding open. Overall, the ride wasn’t good nor was it bad. It’s now checked off our bucket list and we won’t have the need to try this again.

We went from Hanoi to Sapa. Bus supposed to leave at 6:30 a.m. We were there at 6 o'clock (because you should come 30 mins earlier). At 6:45 came some guy and opened the shuttle bus shop. At 7 o'clock he called taxi (he paid for it) to take us to another place where our bus was waiting. We had to wait for more people. The departure was before 8 o'clock. Bus was full and more people got on the bus during the journey - they were locals and stayed in the aisle and got out on the way. There was a blanket. Seats were old, not very clean and not comfortable for taller people. We stopped for a break for almost one hour. The bus arrived one and half hour later then it should have. It was unfortunate because we had plans for the day and had to cancel them.

We really enjoyed our journey to Sa Pa. Our compartment was clean and comfortable - the beds were on the firm side, but we like that. The train departed and arrived on time. There was some clunking and banging on the journey, but otherwise we had a good sleep. I’ve seen lots of negative reports about the toilets. They were clean before we left Hanoi but there was a lot of ‘splashing’ from the westerners who had obviously had a few drinks before boarding. This is not the fault of Vietnamese railways! Top marks from us; we’re looking forward to our next journey.

The train car was pretty old. The toilet was dirty and covered in either urine or water. The cabin itself was ok, but we killed at least a dozen cockroaches and a couple other insects during our 8 hour ride. We slept maybe an hour of the entire trip because of the insect problem. Overall not a great experience.

We booked a double room. The rooms was clean and cute. It’s not exactly easy to sleep. It’s pretty loud and the train rocks quite a bit. Navigating the train station in Hanoi was a bit difficult. Several attendants at the train station directed us to different tracks and trains. We made it on the train about 10 minutes before it left. The train left exactly at 2135 and we arrived on time at the station before Sapa. There is a snack cart and coffee and tea offered in the morning. We experienced the same lack of toilet paper as everyone else. So bring your own just in case.

Comfortable sleeper bus, no space for bags though, all need to go in the under compartment of the bus. Reason for 4* and not 5* is the space on the bus is not brilliant and when I called the office they told me that they couldn’t pick me up, even though I was staying in the old quarter. I had to walk to the office and they then changed their mind and agreed to pick us up. Bus arrived at SaPa early.

It was alright. Not super comfortable as the bed was a bit too short for me (I'm 181cm) and the bus felt quite cramped overall - i.e. there was no space for the hand luggage. But I guess that comes with the affordable price and the drive was smooth & on time.

The cabins were comfortable and clean. But please do not expect too much, it's an old train that doesn't move too fast and makes a lot of noise when it does. Not for fussy sleepers but we had a great overall experience.

Ty vymenite v druhe nadrazni budove na ulici Tran Quy Cap. Staci ukazat voucher a oni vas nasmeruji k panovi, ktery vam preda listky. Nechodte do hlavni budovy nadrazi na ulici Le Duan, stejne vas poslou na vyse zminene nastupiste. Everything was clean and OK. You can exchange your ticket voucher into train tickets at “Tran Quy Cap” street. Do not waste your time to go to the main train station hall at Le Duan street ;)

I was first dropped off on a busy route without an english speaking guide. Then after making myself angry, he let me into the bus who was a sleeping bus. For me was the length okay but for people taller than 1m64, it must have been a horrible trip. Then in the middle of the night (at 3:00am) we stopped in a place with no lights, in the mudder. There were toilets but they were very dirty. We were able to sleep until 6:00am in the bus on that spot, which I didn’t know. I booked a hotel that night, so I lost my money then. No communication and no english speaking guide! Not nice!

The decoration in the train was classic and beautiful. The ventilation was ok. A bit bumpy, the birth was better than the train from South to North. The pillow and blanket liked clean. The toilet at the beginning of the journey was clean. The train officer had proposed the 16 seat from Loa Cai to Sapa at 50,000 VND (from the Loa Cai station direct to the hotel in Sapa)

Ok the “train” is actually a railway cart, using the words luxury or delux is not going to change the facts its a sleeper cart from the 70is and has no sound dented what so ever. Be advice take the sleeper bus or rent a cab it’s cheaper and more luxury.

The voucher is not your ticket. You need to exchange your voucher for a ticket, from the ticket office about a km from the station or ring the hotline and someone will meet you at the station with the tickets.

For the majority of the journey, there were alarming sounds coming from the outside of the carriage - a series of explosive bangs, clangs & dragging noises which reverberated through the carriage, making it sound like the carriage was about to fall apart! It was difficult to sleep because it was so loud. The driver made a few sudden stops throughout the night as well, which jolted you awake. The staff were grumpy if you didn't want a coffee (for 120,000 VND!!) The berths were fairly comfortable though & the free snacks/water were appreciated. Also, the process of buying & collecting tickets was made easy through 12go Asia.

Bus ride was safe and comfortable. Each of us were given cabin seat-beds. However, if you’re taller than 1.75m, movement and leg space of cabin seat-beds might be slightly limited. But overall, pick-up and journey was easy and smooth.

Overall our trip was very very good. Easy picking up tickets, attendants pointed us to correct train car, etc. Cabin was clean, with clean sheets. We saw that there was WiFi but never got the password. Train bathroom was questionable but not the absolute worst. No toilet paper when we first arrived, but it was refilled the next morning. There were 2 sinks separate from toilet so you can brush teeth, etc.! We got a 2-person private cabin, so the mattresses were doubled up, firm, which I liked. Train is rocky and loud so bring ear plugs! Would do it again!

Clean, tidy room, though it is a cabin so was very small. If you're taller than 5 10' you won't be able to like out straight. Train ran on time and there were no complications.
