Passenger reviews out of total 5,745 passengers who traveled with us on this route.

At 12Go our operators offer three types of service:

Cheap, Fast, Good - but you can usually pick only two of them!
Cheap & Fast won’t be Good. (e.g. buses from/to Khao San Road, local buses or 3rd class trains)
Cheap & Good won’t be Fast. (e.g. VIP trains in Thailand)
Fast & Good won’t be Cheap. (e.g. private limousine services, or VIP24 buses vs Express buses)

Make your choice! Please remember that while we are closely monitoring the services, we are still an agency marketplace. That means we focus on ticketing services and route availability & coverage rather than on the factual seat reclining angle you will get on the bus today.

The actual train trip was good, however I had problems with the booking. I paid for four seats in the cabin so we didn’t have to share with strangers. My receipt showed all seats together in the same car. But when we got there, the boarding passes were in two different cars! My son and I had to wait outside the train until minutes before departure to see if we would have our own cabin. Ridiculous!
12Go response:
Sorry but I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding here. If at all possible we book your entire group into one cabin but in this case it was not. Often the lower berths will sell out much faster than the upper berths (especially in the week before and after major holidays such as now) and so it becomes impossible to get four in the same cabin or car. Boarding was very quick and smooth and the train left on time. Like other travellers have commented the train was very noisy and rattled and bumped its way to Da Nang where we departed for Hoi An. Shared the cabin with a number of insects and a tiny mouse who was intent on eating our complimentary chocolate bar which he had half achieved by the time we got off. It was an experience but an ok one!

You know, lots of negative comments on here and I’m reading some validity in many, but I think some expectations might have been off. Did Hanoi to Denang sleeper with hubby and two sons, so had a cabin to ourselves, which I think makes a HUGE difference. You can’t control for bunk mates. Bedding clean but not sparkling white. Toilets sloshed a bit yup. It’s a wobbly train. We brought wipes and toilet paper and were prepared for that. The boys LOVED the experience and the views for the last couple hours of the trip were fascinating. Boarding the train in Hanoi was fine. Had arranged for a driver with the hotel at the small Denang station, so the logistics worked. Really glad we did it. A fun part of the trip. Would I do it agaiin? Since flying is similar price and so much quicker probably not, but really am glad we did it for this leg. Bring your own food. Particularly breakfast.

The bus itself was okay. However there was only one break in 16 hours and the bus driver started to play music on high volume at 1.30am in the morning. Even though we asked he didn’t turn it off.

This was a good journey that was on time when departing and arriving from Da Nang. The views were also beautiful between Hue and Da Nang. It could be improved with cleaner toilets and fresh sheets for the beds. There was also regular interruptions to buy things when we were trying to sleep.

After reading so many mixed reviews of these trains I was slightly trepidatious on embarking on an overnighter, but thinking it through, the worst that could happen would be a crummy night's sleep, so decided to book a ticket anyhow. If bad, the experience would perhaps be some thing worth writing about, and if good, then great! The major complaint by most people seemed to be regarding cleanliness and the presence of roaches. Perhaps all the people who have been pleased by the trip haven't bothered to leave reviews then? I was utterly shocked by how clean the compartment I had was, and it seemed all the other compartments in my car were equally clean. There were even flowers in a vase on the table in every room! Mattresses were typical of Vietnamese mattresses, which is they were firm. I love a firm mattress, so was very comfortable. I had a top bunk, which I found to be wide enough for myself and my laptop and camera to rest. Linens were clean, and there is an open compartment beyond one's feet where additional baggage would be stored if necessary (I kept mine under the bottom bunk, but I suspect I should have tossed it up here). I would recommend packing along a jacket like a Patagonia Nano Puff (warmish, but packs down into a small pocket). The a/c is frigid, and my only complaint, and it goes on and off all night. The linens provided are not really up to the task of keeping one warm. The train was noisy and rocked a bit, but these are old tracks, so hardly surprising. If you're a European used to the smooth ride of your high-speed rail, this is not it, but if you're an American and have traveled with Amtrak, then this is pretty on par with that. The toilet was fine, I thought, and the window in there was kept open at all times, so it didn't smell too strongly. I wouldn't envy any ladies, or gents needing to sit though. Just empty your bowels before departure and you should be fine. After I was the only person left in my compartment a man came along to shoo me out and into another room. It took a second for me to deduce that he wanted to clean, and because other people had departed (this was about three hours to my eventual arrival at 12:30pm) other cabins I could easily be consolidated into one of those. This is quite practical thinking, but being as this is something that wouldn't happen in the States I was initially surprised by it. Great idea though, and the guy gave me a handshake once I understood and moved my things for him. Anyway, it was a great trip. Scenery closer to Da Nang is gorgeous. Did not buy any food on board, just brought some leftover pizza as dinner (do go to Cugini in Tay Ho, if you're in the area). I waited until I got off the train to get anything else. Hunger doesn't bother me much, and I knew there would be better food in Da Nang than whatever I might find on the train.

After reading lots of horror stories we were both pleasantly surprised by how easy, safe, comfortable and clean our journey was. The toilets had hand soap... Something I'd previously not seen yet in Vietnam so a big thumbs up there too. It's a long journey but we slept for 1/2 of it, didn't even hear many carts going past selling things. Perhaps we got lucky but I'd recommend this to anyone with a long journey ahead.

Having travelled Vietnam Railways previously from HCM to Da nang I was expecting a much newer cleaner carriage as per information provided on Violette site. Given the extra cost, I wouldn’t was my money on using one of these private carriers in the future. Just go with the locals still in a soft sleeper. 12go Asia provided very clear specific instructions allowing us to easily redeem our tickets using the voucher.

All in all a good experience no problem exchanging voucher for boarding card train was on time and the cabins were clean a lot better than I had been led to believe. Bed was a little hard but I’ve slept in worse hotel rooms. 1st time I’ve slept on a train so wasn’t the best nights sleep but still got a good few hours. Took my own food but there is a trolley that comes round with some snacks. Plenty of hot water available for pot noodles. Toilet on our coach was blocked and almost overflowing but the next one was working fine. If you want to sit down make sure you take a seat cover and take some toilet paper with you. The views between Hue and Danang are breathtaking! I’d advise any one to to do this just be prepared and you won’t be disappointed

I took the 16 hour train ride from Hanoi to Da Nang. Surprisingly it went by pretty quick than it sounds like. The great experience were the scenic views of vietnam out the window. The meals were also surprisingly good. Not sure about everyones appetite but i had the beef and rice and i liked it. The toilets were what everyone has said to be, so i tried to go to the toilet less. We booked the 1st class sleeper. It consisted of 4 beds in a cabin. The beds were quite hard but they were comfortable enough to have some sleep. We also had a few families cramped up into our cabin for a couple of hours. Im assumed they only booked 1 bed for a family of 3. I didnt mind sharing my cabin with a few more people than what it suppose to be. Despite all the small negatives, i wouldn’t mind to use the vietnam trains to travel again. Thank you! Regards, Lisa

Well, after wonderful experiance with booking train, I wish I could say the same for airplane. What happened, I am positive I put Pha Long as departure city and destination Da Nang. Don't know why 12goasia offered Hanoi to Da Nang!? So we had to travel with taxi from Halong bay to catch airplane in the morning...and by luck we noticed that our airport is not HBH... We could travel for 33$, instead we payed over 60$. If I put Phai Long, don't offer me Hanoi. Have a nice day!

Brilliant Trip! Nothing like travelling in a train, beats a bus and plane and you get to meet and engage with other travellers, sleep, eat, view the countryside. If the journey is not just the destination, this is the way to travel, just Brilliant. We travelled by train (left 7.30om, arrived 11am) from Hanoi to Danang, mainly for the experience. We booked for 2 x adults and 2 children - 13 and 10. The mattresses were rock hard and we're not sure how often the bed covers were washed. The beds were short (about 6ft, 1.8m) and narrow but we slept most of the night. We ate the boiled eggs, noodles and tea which came around from about 8am. The cabin was clean and contained what we needed. We would definitely do it again. The views closer to Danang were fabulous.

Cabin was as nice as we expected. Looked like the picture, just smaller. The bathrooms even had toilet paper, which is as nice as it gets in some places. It was a little cold so dress warm or bring a jacket. And would suggest Drommamine if you get car sick for the motion of the train.

On time, easy to board. Of course the train isn’t the orient express, so manage your expectations and prepare accordingly (tissues, wipes etc, food, water). We felt very safe and the conductor made sure you go off at the right stop. We booked the two bottom bunks in the cabin which gave us the table and ample storage under the beds. Top bunks are accessed with a single foothold and handle - might not be ideal of those with limited mobility

We booked through 12go.Asia and were very happy with the information provided prior to booking and found the tongue in cheek, say it like it is, info provided with the tickets highly entertaining and having lived in Asia for 10 yrs very accurate! For example they say if you may a phone call to the train operator and you sound like you’re speaking Klingon they will just hang up on you! We travelled in a Violette carriage. Boarding the train at Hanoi was easy. We checked in at the ticketing booth in the waiting room and were told our carriage and cabin number. When we went to go through the barriers the same lady appeared and gave our actual tickets directly to the attendant, to stop us losing it I guess! We couldn’t board the train until 30 mins before dept so the recommended ‘be there an hour before’ is actually plenty of time. The cabin was as expected: 4 berths and a table, 4 bottles of water, 4 over ripe bananas and some ( not very nice) chocolate biscuits. A USB port and reading light above each bed. Plenty of space under the bottom bunks to store suitcases but large hard shell ones may not fit. Top bunks have some small storage shelves by the beds. Each bunk has a small rail and a hook, a pillow, duvet and bottom sheet. It did get a bit cold but a a jumper was sufficient and the children said the top bunks were coldest as they were closer to the aircon. ( note we travelled in Dec and Hanoi was freezing so maybe it wouldn’t be cold in the summer, I don’t know!) We read the reviews in advance and so were prepared with extra toilet roll, disposable toilet seat covers and hand soap: all were def needed. We also took rubber flip flops to wear when going to toilet. We had read the reviews about the bedding not being changed and so took our own silk liners and slept inside them above the sheet, under the duvet and with the pillow inside the pillow pocket; seemed a hygienic way around the problem! I had also been warned about the lack of and quality of food but that there was plenty of free hot water so we took plenty of snacks, coffee and hot chocolate sachets and pot noodles. Take your own spoons and cups etc and a thermos coffee cup/ flask for getting the hot water. We also took wet wipes which were great for freshening up on the train and wiping the sink down for teeth brushing etc. We were so glad we did this journey by train. The experience was fun, the scenery was interesting and beautiful. It was much less stressful than flying and probably what me and my children( 16 and 13) will talk about more than anything else when we return from our trip. Additional point: we were in a Violette cabin, the state run 1st class cabins seemed the same except the bottom fitted sheet was more like a thinly padded mat placed on top of the mattress but apart from that exactly the same. Both these carriages seemed to have similar people in them ( I don’t mean race, there was a mixture of Caucasians, Asians, Indian etc) by that I mean friendly and respectful when we walked through the carriages. The locally run 2nd class carriages were the same except that they had 3 bunks on each side so you couldn’t sit upright and less storage space. Because of that there were more people spilling into the corridors chatting loudly or on their phones and gathering and smoking where the carriages connected. It was not intimidating at all but it was quite noisy with chatting and phone calls. Whereas the Livitrains and Violette were quieter and more restful. Equally there would have been more people to share the bathrooms etc. If you choose to take a seat and not a cabin that seemed fine too for the money. We would have considered that had we been just adults but it wouldn’t have been as relaxing. For example some people were playing games on their phones without turning their sound down and that would’ve got on my nerves after 16 hours! If I did it again (and we def would!) the only thing we would take extra would be an eye mask each and some good ear plugs but it was fine - we didn’t really expect a really good nights sleep but what we got was okay!

The train ride itself was fine. I knew it was going to be long and not so spacious. However, I was not prepared for how dirty the hallways and bathrooms were going to be, especially considering the way it was advertised on their own website. Most (if not all) of the toilets were not flushing and considering the fact that the train was bumpy, this was a fairly horrendous sight. It got so bad that we ended up avoiding the bathroom all together for the last 4-5 hours. Furthermore, we were so concerned about the our train from Danang to Ho Chi Minh that we decided to purchase flights instead and eat the cost of the train tickets. A plus was that the last 4 hours of the ride was met with gorgeous views of the countryside and the ocean. So beautiful in fact that it almost made up for everything else. While I am open to this situation being below the average experience, please consider our feedback when determining a flight or train ride.

At the train station when I went to claim the ticket i was asked by the staff if I want to have a full private cabin by paying another 2 million Vietnamese Dongs ( i am not sure if this was a scam or real, since I didn’t receive a voucher for that and the staff put the money in her own bag). Probably next time i will try the Vietnam Railways 1st class. Since there is no difference but the later is cheaper.

The seats were comfortable and even I'm over 6'3" I slept well with slightly bend legs. What can be improved is certainly communication. The bus departed 1.5h behind schedule. Nobody told us when bus arrive. Also at 4am I was woken up by one of the staff who doesn't speak english well and it looked like he want me to get off somewhere in the middle of the way between Hanoi and Da Nang. It showed up he just want me to go out and show him which bags are mine. Idk why. Second thing what can be improved is cleanliness. There is tons of small cockroaches living in the area where window enters interior wall. One vacuum in this area would certainly help. Otherwise satisfaction. I arrived in time.

It was an interesting experience for my kids and me. Although, the toilet has strong urine smell the minute you enter it. Cleanliness cant really be seen because I took a night train so, it's quite dark and we didn't go back when it's day time. Our sleeper was okay but my daughter started shouting in the morning when she saw a cockroach crawling on her bed. Upon leaving the train, my other daughter saw quite a big rat passing through in between the toilet area and the cabin. We were so blessed that we didn't see the sight of it, when we were still a long way to go to our destination. We will surely take the plane back.

The train was very old, dirty, had little mice , beetles , linen not freshly washed. The air con works. There are people getting in and off at all times of the night. ( our cabin mate joined us at 0200 making a lot of noise , lights on etc) The views along the coastline from 0700 on the way to Danang were lovely. We were lucky to have the whole cabin to the two of us, but if it were fully packed, it would've been very cramped. Upper berths seemed difficult to climb up as there were no actual ladders, only a tiny collapsible metal step on the wall you can step on. AC stopped intermittently, which would leave the room hot and humid immediately, but when it worked, it would blast on full power and we were left cold with the flimsy blankets that were provided. The train was very shaky the whole ride, although we managed to fall alseep. There wasn't any onboard marts or trolleys from which we could purchase water or any simple snack, but I would have refrained from doing so anyway just to avoid going to the washroom as it got filthy really quickly. The train was a lot better than we had anticipated. I had read reviews staying it was difficult to exchange tickets at the station, however when we arrived there was a lady who directed us into our cabin (a VIP livitrans 4-sleeper) that we would be sharing with two others. We were very lucky as the train was empty, so one of the staff asked us if we would like to move to another cabin free of charge, which we had to ourselves - a very welcome surprise! The airconditioning was very strong, so I would recommend bringing along a jumper/extra blanket as it can get quite uncomfortably cold. The beds were quite hard, but comfortable enough. The toilets were as expected of train travel, although the staff did make an effort to clean these regularly - just take tissues with you just in case. We didn’t try any of the food from the food cart, but highly recommend bringing your own snacks. Overall a pleasant trip - if you take some headphones to drown out the sound and a jumper to keep you warm, you can get a decent nights sleep and enjoy some amazing views. Would recommend over flying.
