Delhi to Ahmedabad

To get from Delhi, India’s capital city, to Ahmedabad, a large city in the state of Gujarat, there are several travel options. One can take a flight, which is the fastest means of travel, a train or a bus, which is the cheapest way to travel.

The distance between Delhi to Ahmedabad by road is 926 kilometres, which will take at least 16 hours to cover; a bus journey takes typically 20 hours due to frequent stops on the way. By train, the distance is 912 kilometres and is approximately a 13 hour journey. Meanwhile, a flight will take an hour and a half and cover 775 kilometres.

Flight tickets from Delhi to Ahmedabad cost between INR1800 - 5000 depending on the airline and class you chose. Rail tickets cost between INR 500 - 4000 while a bus ticket is around INR 1000.

Flights from Delhi to Ahmedabad

If you book your tickets a month and a half in advance, tickets from the Delhi domestic airport to the Jaipur airport are approximately INR 1800 on a budget airline and INR 3000 on a normal airline. For a cheaper fare, book tickets for flights in the middle of the day as there’s a lower demand for them.

There are several airlines which fly from Delhi to Ahmedabad daily including budget airlines like IndiGo and Spice Jet and more premium carriers like Vistara and Jet Airways. While all airlines allow between 15-20 kg of free check-in baggage, budget airlines do not serve free meals. While they do offer in-flight menu, these options tend to be quite exorbitant so we’d recommend you carry your own food or snacks on board.

Jet Airways, Air India and Vistara are all premium airlines which serve complimentary meals on board. The recently launched Vistara has been receiving positive attention for its great customer service.

The flying time from Delhi to Ahmedabad is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes on a direct flight. Connecting flights take several hours more and are priced the same as direct flights so are not worth considering.

Buses from Delhi to Ahmedabad

From Delhi to Ahmedabad, a bus ticket costs between INR 1000-1800. During summers, one should take air-conditioned coaches, while in winters a non-air conditioned bus will suffice.

For air-conditioned coaches, the best operators are Rishabh Travels, Charu Tours and Travels and Gujarat Travels. These operators also have some non-air conditioned buses and offer a choice between sleeper and seater seats.

Delhi is a fair distance from Ahmedabad so the bus journey will take up to twenty hours. The bus will stop several times to allow passengers to visit the bathroom, purchase snacks and meals and stretch their legs.

Carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer as the bathrooms the buses stop at are frequently used and may run out of amnesties.

There are at least two daily departures from Delhi to Ahmedabad. The buses typically leave from Delhi in the afternoon or late evening and reach Ahmedabad in the late evening or night the next day. To cancel your ticket, get in touch with the bus operator at least 24 hours before your trip.

Most buses in India don’t have toilets on board but there will be several toilet stops along the way. Snacks and water are not served on board, but one can purchase food at the multiple stops the bus makes on the journey.

In the evening or early night, many of the buses will show movies or local TV shows on an overhead screen.

Trains from Delhi to Ahmedabad

Train tickets from Delhi to Ahmedabad cost between INR 450 for a Sleeper Class ticket to INR 4000 for a first class AC ticket, agent’s commission not included.

Delhi has several main train stations; New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), the Delhi Sarai Rohilla Railway Station (DEE) and the Old Delhi Railway Station (DLI) while Ahmedabad has one main station, the Ahmedabad Junction Railway Station (ADI). When booking tickets, be sure to check which station your train is departing from.

Trains starting in Delhi include the Ashram Express, the Gujarat S Kranti and the Delhi S Rohilla Bandra Terminus Express.

The Ahmedabad Junction Sj Rajdhani is the fastest train from Delhi to Ahmedabad; it takes just over thirteen hours. On average, the journey takes 16-20 hours.

There are many train departures from Delhi to Ahmedabad which begin in the early morning and continue until 9:30pm. Most ticket cancellations have to be done at least 48 hours in advance. There is a cancellation fee of INR 240.

Depending on the class you chose, there different amnesties offered.

First Class AC is an air conditioned compartment with 2-4 berths, clean bathrooms with showers, complimentary meals and a bearer to serve meals and make up beds. However, First Class AC tickets cost the same as flight tickets.

Second Class AC is a good compromise; tickets are cheaper, the compartment is air-conditioned and meals are complimentary. There is less privacy as there are four to eight berths in a compartment and bathrooms are generally less clean than the First Class AC ones.

On a shoe-string budget, Third Class AC is also an option; here meals are not complimentary and there are several berths (over eight) in one compartment.
