I am not rating the trip as the trip didn't happen, but rating 12Go. I had to cancel my trip because of the third wave of Covid19 emerging in Thailand. By the time I decided to cancel they anounced a 14 day quarantine in Chiang Mai for travellers coming from Bangkok. Obviously couldn't make the trip under such conditions. I contacted 12Go for a refund as the Transport Ministry anounced passengers can get 100% refund of their tickets. The reply was "the train is still going so you are entitled to 15% only". Which I might have accepted if they didn't continue with requesting a copy of my passport and a hand written document in which I allow them to cancel the ticket on my behalf (and hence get the refund). So they would get 1000 baht and give me 150. They also added that if I want a full refund I have to go to their office, collect the ticket and then go to the train station myself. After they had already charged me a hefty service fee of 250 baht upon purchasing the ticket initially. For what if they offer no assistance? It's obvious I bought the ticket via 12Go because I didn't have the time to personally go to the train station. Yes, I did read the terms and conditions when I booked the ticket, but we all know these times are special and each and every company out there (even banks) try and accommodate customers somehow. 12Go wouldn't do that, just charge you 250 baht service fee and then refuse to assist you when issues appear. I would say save your money. 12Go are probably very reliable when times are good, but not so much when you really need them.

This was probably the worst train ride I've had in Thailand so far, and I have had many. Overnight Express Train #13 from Bangkok to Chiang Mai... exhaust fumes were blowing through the air vents, I struggled to breathe. I speak Thai. I asked the conductor to switch on the fans, and he ignored my request. The train was 2 hours late arriving in Chiang Mai.

Booking with 12go was super easy and convenient, nothing to complain about. The train from the other hand was in pretty rough condition (train 13). This particular train was the worst we've taken in Thailand. No water in the toilet, and overall the car looked really old. We arrived to Chiang Mai more than 2 hours late. I've recently taken another train from BKK to Chiang Mai (the one with earlier departure, around 6 pm) and it was far better experience.

In this current bus we had mask-addicted stewart spreading fear and wearing a piece of a light textile on her face. She tried to force us to do the same. I hope she'll be fine.

All good apart from no buffet car and very limited food and drinks on offer. For me the bed is a bit short. Also, I found the train a bit noisier than normal and had a few problems getting to sleep. Apart from that, everything was good : )

Train is ok, and the free meals, snacks , coffee/tea were a surprise. Air conditioning is so cold that you have to pile on everything you have to survive. No blankets provided ( day train). Difficult to move around the train becaise the ride is not very smooth. Would definitely advise taking the night train and getting a bed as the scenery is a bit disappointing except for a few stretches.

Ticketing was easy and the staff at 12go were great! The train is an experience I’ll never forget. I HIGHLY recommend ear plugs. The train is pretty loud and creaky. We had been up for over 24 hours before we got on the night train and I still had a bit of trouble falling asleep going through Bangkok. Once we were out of the city the tracks smoothed out and I passed out. If I would have had ear plugs I would have probably been fine. There are a few outlets around the train. None in the bunks but they are there. My phone was almost dead and I luckily was able to secure power before Chiang Mai otherwise we would have not had GPS. Also when you get to Chiang Mai don’t get a taxi at the station. They were all trying to charge 50$ USD to take you to the city. Walk through the people and get a taxi a little ways away from the train on the Main Street to the city.

I had a lower berth. A train worker made my bed. The bed was fine. The train shakes tangibly back and forth and it was quite cold due to the air conditioning. You will get a blanket (slightly thicker than a towel) but make sure you are wearing something warm. I thought it was a great experience and great that you don't waste a day traveling.

The train attendant who was a woman named Lee, sold my friends 4 tins as “beer” but then we realised they were alcohol free. I think that was very misleading. Over all the train journey was fine, a bit hard to sleep because the lights were left on all night and the train was loud, but that can’t be helped. I would use Go Asia again to book travel as it was easy and helpful, but not sure if I would travel on the train again.

I would surely recommand going by train. Tips: 1. The airco is quit cold. Bring enough warm clothes with you. 2. Bring an eye cover and earplugs. 3. The lowest bed has got a window so you see the sunset.

How long does it take to get from Hua Lamphong to Chiang Mai by Train?

Best-Rated Companies for this Route

Unlike buses or taxis which have numerous companies offering their services, train service is usually offered by just one major company in each country. As railway service requires a large amount of infrastructure, most railway companies are government-owned and are a part of the national transport system.

One of the best advantages of travelling by train is that railway stations are often conveniently located within or very near major cities and urban areas. Immediately on arrival to their destination, travellers find themselves in close proximity to important facilities like hotels, supermarkets, and hospitals.

If you travel with a lot of bags and luggage, trains are your best option. Luggage weight limits on trains are rather flexible and allow you to carry multiple bags with you.

Special or luxury trains feature sufficient legroom which allows you to stretch your legs and relax. In comfort and space these train seats can be compared to business class airplane seats.

Similar to buses, trains can provide a variety of amenities to make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. Modern trains have WIFI service, a snack counter and a drinking bar. Onboard toilets can be a life saver for travellers with queasy stomachs.

Lastly, unlike buses and other overland means of transport, trains are very rarely involved in accidents.
