Songserm is a ferry and bus operator that specializes in ferry services throughout the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. It offers joint bus&ferry tickets, too, connecting Bangkok and destinations in the south of Thailand with the islands of the Gulf.

Songserm ferry advertises itself as the oldest express boat company to provide service to the islands the Gulf and the Andaman Sea.

Routes served by Songserm

Songserm express boats ply the seas between Chumphon and Surat Thani on the mainland and Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand.

In the Andaman Sea, Songserm express ferries connect Koh Phi Phi with Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta as well as to the three above mentioned islands of the Gulf of Siam.

The company’s joint bus&ferry tickets are a convenient and budget-friendly way to get from Bangkok to the islands avoiding the hassle of self-connection.

From Bangkok to the islands of the Gulf

All tickets from Bangkok to the islands – Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui – are combination tickets.

It means that from Bangkok you are bussed to the port first and then you have to hop onto Songserm’s ferry. It is the contrary order in the opposite direction.

In Bangkok, the company’s buses leave from the Songserm Khao San Road office next to Siam Oriental Inn.

All departures from Khao San Songserm station are night buses. Taking a night bus is a sensible way to save your daytime. Buses arrive to the pier early in the morning allowing you to get to your destination before or around noon the day after you have left Bangkok.

Travellers heading to any of the three islands use the same Songserm bus regardless of their final destination.

Passengers travelling to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan continue their bus trip to Donsak pier in Surat Thani where they board a ferry heading first to Koh Samui and then to Koh Phangan.

Travel times from Bangkok to the islands

  3. Koh Phangan – 17-18 hours

In the opposite direction, there is one departure a day from each island around noon to allow you to cross the sea before dark and hop onto a night bus to arrive to Khao San Songserm office in Bangkok early the next morning.

Those travelling from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui change for a bus in Surat Thani; a ferry from Koh Tao brings you to Chumphon to catch the same bus that travels up from Surat Thani.

Cons

  1. The biggest issue is the duration of some of these trips. As there is only a limited number of ferry services available, you can sometimes have a wait of several hours between getting off the bus and boarding the ferry. This is less than ideal if the trip is already 10 or 12 hours long anyway!

  2. Travel time over the same route varies depending on the departure time, so always check the duration of each trip before you book your ticket to avoid a longer trip than necessary.

The ferry works well. There are a lot of passengers but the crew do it's best to have a smooth boarding process. However customer service regards to beverages and snacks works only first 30 minutes. Such info is not provided in advance. It could be nice if such worning would be available before tickets purchasing. The ship is well and the chairs are comfortable. There is enough space for legs.

Hassle Free Travel. Comfortable and clean ferry. Well coordinated, when you get to the Pier someone will group you per location and assign a van for you and bring you to your hotel in Ao Nang.

It is very long but it was ok. Next time I will fly to Surra Thani, but for this time it was ok. You arrive at a bus station at 5 a.m. where you need to wait for the next bus to the harbour and this is a bit annoying if you slept very well in the bus and need to get up. Ferry was totally ok. Good sleep to be honest.

The trip was fine and we even made it a bit earlier, but personal note, try to book with Hotel transfer as otherwise you will end up spending more for a taxi within Koh Samui than the ferry trip itself.

Overall, we were very impressed. We travelled on a very rocky and windy day and were stressed based on previous reviews, but the journey was made more comfortable by the size of the boat. It was quick and timely and seats were comfortable. The stop at Koh Phagnan on the way was not an issue at all and didn’t interfere with the journey.

The boat arrived on time. But the AC was too high. It was raining so I couldn't go outside and was freezing sitting inside there. I eventually catched a cold :( It took us about 5 hours to arrive to koh tao. The ceiling had holes and on some point water came trough it because of the strong rain. Some passengers had to switch seats to avoid getting wet.

I took a Lomphrayah speed catamar to Koh Tao which was scary and borderline unsafe. To come back, I took a Songserm ferry and was extremely happy with it, fewer people, so much space for yourself, no scary rocking of the boat, no one puking. I am surprised why more people don’t choose this option over speedboats.

Everyone was puking on the boat Trip We thought that we will have a 1 hour boat trip to surat thani. But we got brought to every Island in a speedboat where it was like 5 hours of Roller coaster. Let the people know what they will experience. The earliest we knew what would happen was at the Pier when we registrated.

Alles wunderbar, nur innen war die Klimaanlage sehr kalt eingestellt. Wenn man nicht draußen in der Sonne sitzen will, sollte man sich warm anziehen. (Aber vielleicht fährt auf Verbindung ja auch nicht immer dasselbe Schiff.)

make sure you get there early as you have to join a huge queue to get your actual tickets. we sat in the lower deck and the ceiling was leaking so us and our bags were drenched! they pile all suitcases and backpacks in a pile at the back of the boat so when you get there you’re waiting 30 mins to an hour to get your bag! it wasn’t a bad ride until the end with the delay of getting your bag and the instability of the walkway and pier getting off! use a different service
