About Manta Express

To get to the most picturesque islands you cannot avoid taking a ferry. Some destinations are served by larger and more stable car ferries, others are connected by smaller but faster high speedboats or catamarans. If you easily get seasick, avoid travelling by catamaran which rides the waves when the sea is rough – rather opt for a high speed boat as it cuts the water what results in a less rock-and-rolling trip. Also, taking a seat on an upper open-air deck may help weather high waves. Manta Express offers online tickets for ferry trips – it is not even necessary to pop in at their office to buy one.

What are the Main Stations of Manta Express?

  • Padang Bai Manta Express
  • Bangsal Pier
  • Gili Trawangan Port
  • Gili Air
  • Padang Bai Port

What are the Ferry Classes & Prices of Manta Express?

The rule of thumb is the faster the boat, the higher the price is. Before booking, decide whether you need an express service or slower options are also acceptable. The rates for the latter are much more affordable. Yet the difference in the travel time may be really huge, so always check how long the ferry trip takes before you book your ticket. Also, the availability of some classes can be limited and always requires advanced booking. Always remember to check the pier your boat leaves from and docks at to choose the most convenient one for your onward trip and read other travellers' reviews.

Pros & Cons of Ferry Travel

Pros of Ferry Travel

  • To take a ship is the only way to reach some of the islands. And in many cases – some of the most beautiful, postcard and paradise islands you have always wished to go!
  • Different ticket classes are often available so you will be able to choose the fare, level of comfort, travel time, and schedule which suits you best.
  • Book online to save time – on many routes, booking in advance is an absolute must. In the first place, it concerns longer trips, trips on busy periods like national holidays, long weekends or high season. It is a good idea to book at least several days prior to your travel date if your route is served by a limited number of trips per day, too.
  • Travelling by ferry is fun. It is always nice to have a look at the places you have visited from another angle – well, in this case – from water. Almost any destination looks terrific from water and you will have a great opportunity to take brilliant pictures.

Cons of Ferry Travel

  • Getting seasick is the major concern for ferry travellers. The longer is the trip and the rougher the sea is, the more chances to feel your stomach protesting. To make your trip more enjoyable, take the medicine half an hour before your trip and follow our recommendations from above.
  • Ferry trips are highly weather dependent. It means that on rainy days departures can be delayed or even cancelled. It is not an uncommon thing to close the ferry connections even with bigger islands during stormy weather for several days. It means you should keep this possibility in mind if your ferry trip connects with a flight – chances to get to the mainland later than expected can be high during certain periods.

There wasn’t air conditioner and we finish the travel all sweaty. The boat arrived 30’ later but the workers are very fast with the suitcases and it’s easy to find the office for the check in

The boat was late by 1 hour. Everything else was okay.

Booked onto the 1.30 to Gili T, was an hour late. Thought we were going straight to Gili T but ended up in Lombok as the delay had

The departure of the ferry was only postponed from 15:00 to 15:30, which we were told only at check in. Unfortunately, the boat then still did not come and we were rebooked on a ferry of another provider. Unfortunately, no one told us when the ferry comes. Around 16:15 it was there.

The ship arrived 1h30 late and we had to pay an unexpected fee in the harbour

It was alright! Read all the negative comments, so I have to say I was a bit worried. Yes, the boat was delayed about 45-50 minutes and we arrived 30 minutes later than expected, but that was the worst actually. The check-in was smooth, staff was friendly, and the boat trip was ok.

The ride was very bumby and the ferry was crowded. At arrival point many drivers blocking the pier and made it difficult to get out and collect your luggage.

I booked for 11am and when we check in, they changed the time on our ticket to 11h30. They made an unscheduled stop to Lombok...after the planned stop to Gili Air, it was adding up. Arriving in Padang Bai, we got stuck on the boat for an extra hour because of boat traffic. Not their fault, BUT, they never communicated with us while we were waiting...lots of people were getting frustrated. It's normal to have delays, but communication is needed and shows respect. We were disappointed with this company. Boat was fine tho.

The trip went well, boat was comfortable and air conditioned. I recommend taking a seasick pill if you’re quite sensitive. Only thing is we left the harbour of Padangbai 45 min late but arrived only 15 min late so overall very good.

Luggage in good condition which is great. Boat departed 10 mins late but arrived about 40 mins early! Boat journey itself was good. Air con a bit strong if sitting near it, especially for nearly two hours (From Bali to Gili T).

2 stars for Manta Express: We arrived at 8:30 for the checking, the boast can’t travel because the engine had a problem. So we travelled with SemayaOne (5 stars for them) we left 10’ before and arrived in time.
