Lignite

Company Information

When travelling for long distances by bus the good reputation of your operator is a big deal. Lignite Tour can boast one. With its headquarters in the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok (Sai Tai Mai) Lignite buses connect the capital with the southern Thai tourist hubs of Krabi, Phang Nga, Suratthani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Ranong. The company also operates an unusual Krabi–Nakhon Ratchasima route making it possible to travel from the south directly to Isan without connection in Bangkok.

Lignite’s fleet consists of 3 types of buses: most expensive VIP24 buses (3-seats-in-a-line), VIP buses (high-decker with 4-seats-in-a-line, and budget-friendly Standard Express buses, also with 4-seats-in-a-row but with less leg room compared to their VIP version.

All the buses are equipped with air-con and reclining seats. Blankets are provided for all long haul rides and there is a toilet on board. Needless to say comfort gradation hinge on the ticket price.

Routes served by Lignite Tour

The most popular routes of Lignite are Bangkok–Krabi and Bangkok–Suratthani.

Bangkok–Krabi

Lignite operates 3 daily departures from Bangkok to Krabi, all leaving the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok in the evening between 17.30 and 20.40, arriving to Krabi the next morning between 6.00 and 9.00/ The whole trip takes about 12 hours.

In the opposite direction there are both morning (8.00) and evening (17.00) departures with tickets priced between THB600 and THB900 depending on the class of the bus.

Bangkok–Phang Nga

There are two daily departures to Phang Nga, one at 18.40 and the other at 19.05, both from the Southern Bus terminal in Bangkok. Note that the latter departure is usually a double-decker bus which has both VIP and VIP24 options. Pricier seats are located on the lower deck with more budget option – on the upper deck. VIP24 seats are about 1,5 times more expensive than VIPs but they are worth investing in if you wish to survive through an 11-hour journey with all possible comfort.

Krabi–Nakhon Ratchasima

There is one daily departure from Krabi Bus Terminal to Nakhon Ratchasima at 16.50. It is a tiring 16-hour journey which passes via Bangkok but you do not need to change the bus there. There are both VIP and VIP24 options (THB950 and THB1250 respectively) within the same bus and we encourage you to opt for a more expensive one.

Pros

It is a great pro that Lignite tickets are available online – it is a good time option. Those really careful and picky travellers may want to visit Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal first to see how the things are at place. The terminal is integrated with a spacious mall and Lignite ticket counters are located on the 1st floor. It is also the place where you can easily exchange your e-ticket for the boarding pass (you do need that if you buy online through the main Thai booking sites) or handle the whole check-in procedure from the very beginning and proceed to the platform.

After boarding the passengers are offered complimentary snacks and bottled water. The ticket price also included a major meal. For this purpose the bus makes a stop about midnight at a food court where you can exchange your meal coupon for a bowl of rice with curry – do keep your ticket with the printed coupon in order not to miss this perk. The café staff will need your ticket, so make sure you have it at hand. Alternatively you can stock up on munchies at a mini-mart (not included into your ticket price).

Lignite staff are usually very accommodating and though limited English – or no English at all – can be spoken, you will be served well.

Cons

No English spoken by the crew can be rather distracting when you need to know how long the stop will last. The major meal stops usually are about 20 minutes – just follow your fellow passengers not to get lost.

It is a constant issue with many operators and Lignite is no exception: blankets on board are not washed before every departure.

No charging points onboard are available.

Keep in mind

Avoid booking seat right in front or directly behind the stairs to the upper level as there will be no leg room.

Lignite’s ‘express’ class is an economic option –do not expect much of it. VIP guarantees the most comfortable ride and it is worth investing some extra baht if your trip is going to last over 6 hours.

As it is the case with many other operator throughout Thailand, it can get freezing cold inside Lignite’s buses. An extra layer or a jacket will be very handy.

It was a very nice trip. The only reason this is not 5 stars is because there were mo meal vouchers and we got to confirmation in english about how long the stop was going to be.

Well, after reading the previous reviews about Lignite and the bus trip, I had mixed feelings but I'm glad to say that everything on our trip from Bangkok to Krabi went super well! :) We arrived at the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok around 1h prior to departure and with the booking confirmation on my phone, I went to the Lignite counters (37,38,39) and received the bus vouchers instantly without issues. The bus terminal is super big and you can buy all kinds of foods and beverages there (even clothes and souvenirs) which was very convenient. Our bus departed on time around 8:40pm. We had booked the seats number 1 and 2 after I had seen someone else's advice in the reviews to do so, and it was a great advice indeed as we had way more legroom and storage space than anyone else. The bus was in a good shape, the seats were comfy enough, there was a little snack pack (with water, soymilk and a filled bun) awaiting us at our seats as well as a blanket. I had read in previous reviews that the AirCon was very cold, so I brought my jacket but in our case the temperature on the bus was perfect all night long, so I didn't really need to wear it. We did not have to change the bus from BKK to Krabi (which was great), and we arrived at the bus terminal around 8:40am in the morning - I think 20 minutes before our scheduled arrival time. ⏩ All in all, I'm very happy with the overnight bus ride and the service of Lignite and would definitely recommend it to anyone! 5 stars!! Thanks to the bus company and the booking company for such a pleasant experience!! :)

In general the trip went smooth and as described by 12go. I do want to mention the counter is on the 2nd floor and not on the 3rd. There's actually no 3rd floor so don't try looking for it like I did. Other than that the bus boarded at around 20.30pm so I don't see why they ask the to be there one hour before. We arrived at Krabi bus terminal around 9.00 am. For me the seat was comfy and I selpt for most of the trip.

Bus took 14 hours 15 mins, only one stop, don't get front seat or seats above stairs on right not enough leg room. Regularly picking up and dropping off passengers.

Bus was ok, seats were comfortable but journey was very long. My advice is if you can fly, do that, since an 11.5 hour bus journey from Krabi to Bangkok is never going to be a 5 star journey on a bus.

Good service, was easy to find and navigate the bus terminal once we asked around. Water and snacks and a blanket were provided on the coach, the coach made a stop at around 11pm at another bus station with time for toilet/food shop. Seats reclined well! But not all the way. Driver was great, felt safe. Lots of local stops on the way though (normal here). Downsides- No curtains at the front of the bus, so lights would be annoying, bring a face mask! Also, seats were not that comfortable. Tip - if you can, book seats right at the front of the bus (1,2), we had lots of legroom! (but the downsides of seeing headlights). We arrived at our destination roughly on time!

A overnight bus which isn't a sleeper bus? Very uncomfortable. I think you can expect sleeper busses at night in general, at least that's my experience. No snacks like in the other reviews mentioned, not even water. Only: the bus were on time and all the logistics worked out fine. But never again like this for a night bus...

We didn’t feel safe during this trip due to the speeds the driver hit. The bus also took an hour longer than expressed online. The assistant was friendly and helpful however, and made sure we knew when we were stopping.

Was a pleasant journey. Two things that could be improved: bus was way too cold overnight, and we felt it was a bit unclear about when our stop to get off was.

The bus was outdated, which made the seat less comfortable. The footrests weren’t functioning properly and our tv screens were broken. The blanket we got wasn’t warm enough because the airco was too hard. The only break we got was at 22.30 and wasn’t long enough to go to the restroom and eat properly. (Nobody told us how much time we got).

Took the 20h40 bus from Bangkok to Krabi. Overall it was a good experience. Water, soy milk and a sweet snack was provided as well as a blanket. Everything was on time as planned. The seat comfort was okay, it could go almost all the way back. The bus also stopped for food once. The toilet was okay. The only problem was that the USB charging ports did not work. Other than that, it was a good experience.

In general, servis was very good: comfortable bus, good seats, clear departure and arrival schedule, they give 1 bottle of water, cookies, pepsi, coffee or tea and once stope for late dinner with basic Thai food ( I used VIP bus from Krabi to Bangkok ). Just 1 things could be better: wi-fi in the bus ( they don't have internet now)
