About Asia Van Transfer

Company Information

Asia Van Transfer is based in Siem Reap and connects the city known as the gateway to Angkor Wat with destinations across Cambodia and Laos. The operator uses minivans with a capacity of 12 passengers on all the routes.

Routes served by Asia Van Transfer

Siem Reap–Don Det

The main route offered by Asia Van Transfer is between Siem Reap and Don Det, part of the 4,000 Islands region of Laos. The operator uses a fairly newly-established route that is claimed to save around 10 hours on this trip! There is one departure each day from Siem Reap at 08.00 which takes around eight hours, so it is scheduled to arrive for 16.00.

There is also one service per day heading in the opposite direction, also leaving at 08.00. Buses from Don Det to Siem Reap tend to take a fair while longer than those leaving Siem Reap, with journey times of around 10-11 hours common. Ticket prices cost the same in either direction at USD25.

Siem Reap–Pakse

There is also one departure each day from Siem Reap to Pakse in Laos, also leaving at 08.00 and scheduled to arrive at around 17.30. The return journey departs Pakse at 08.00 as well and due to arrive at 18.45. Regardless of the direction of travel, the journey lasts around 10 hours and tickets are priced at USD30.

Siem Reap–Destinations in Cambodia

Asia Van Transfer offers services from Siem Reap to popular destinations dotted across Cambodia. There is one departure to Stung Treng each day, leaving Siem Reap at 08.00 with the five-hour trip meaning that you will arrive in Stung Treng at 13.15. The return trip from Stung Treng back to Siem Reap departs at 14.00 and arrives at 18.30, with tickets costing at USD20.

A shorter journey to Preah Vihear City departs Siem Reap every morning at 08.00 (arriving at 11.15) with the return trip departing at 16.00. The journey lasts around three hours, costing USD12.

Destinations such as Banloung and Kratie are also serviced by Asia Van Transfer, with departures from Siem Reap at 08.00 to each town. Return trips from both Banloung and Kratie depart for Siem Reap at 07.30, with both routes lasting around nine or ten hours and costing USD24.

Pros

The improved condition of the road between Siem Reap and Don Det has saved travellers a significant amount of time, cutting the journey in half! This was a previously very isolated destination that was out of reach for the majority of visitors so this has been a hugely welcome improvement.

Cons

The condition of the buses on many of these routes is often not to a particularly high standard and can be lower than services operated by other operators. This will not be ideal news for passengers as the trips can be pretty long so comfort is an issue, especially as Asia Van Transfer offers minivans on all routes, rather than the larger vehicles you might expect on trips of these distances. Delays are also pretty common, although, in truth this tends to be a problem with all bus companies across Cambodia and Laos.

Crossing the border between Cambodia and Laos is usually a fairly confusing and long-winded process which can take longer than you expect. Of course, it is much easier to fly but this may not be within the budgets of many travellers.

Keep in mind

Children under five are not required to purchase a full-priced ticket. It is also worth noting that these services will usually terminate on the outskirts of town, so you will be required to head to your hotel in a tuk-tuk, which will add to the cost of the journey.

Travellers reviews

The company operates exclusively vans – and most reviews of Asia Van Transfer tend to focus on the standard and comfort of the buses on these routes. Keep in mind that the quality is likely to be considerably different to western standards. Whilst this is less of an issue on the shorter routes, if you are travelling for over 10 hours you will want the trip to be as comfortable as possible. Before booking your ticket do check the length of the trip and decide for yourself whether you are ready to go. If you ask us, we do travel by minibuses around Asia, and while obviously you have less legroom compared to a big bus, you win in transit time.

Passengers sometimes complain about the lack of flexibility in the schedules on routes operated by Asia Van Transfer. There is only one departure each day on these routes and this can often be at an inconvenient time which may not suit your schedule. For example, the only departures to Siem Reap from Stung Treng and Preah Vihear City are at 14.00 and 16.00 respectively which can cause issues for those looking to travel to Siem Reap to catch a flight or another bus to destinations in Cambodia such as Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville.

Asia Van Transfer Company Reviews

From Siem Real to Pakse all the transport was handled by AVT and was great. From Pakse to Vientiane we boarded a bus from a different company they had subcontracted too which was atrocious. The bus was overbooked so we didn’t even get the two beds we paid for leading to an uncomfortable journey.

The vans are ok but not very comfortable as men usually have large shoulders and the seats are a bit narrow. Tourists shold be told to try and make their border process as swftly as possible for respect for the others who are waiting, including drivers.

Free pickup from the nearby hotel. Young and very capable driver. We were not informed that we have a one hour break just 1 hour before arriving at the border. It appeared logical as he remainder of the trip requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle. About 30 minutes after all border formalities darkness started.

The trip from Phnom Penh to Don Det is long, but the logistics of pick up, vehicle changes during the trip and even the river boat transportation to Don Det is quite well coordinated by the company that provides the service. Actually, from the time you are picked up at your hotel in Phnom Penh, until you arrive at the port in Don Det, it takes more than the hours indicated in 12Go, in my case it was almost 12 hours in total including waiting time in restaurants, border crossings and transportation as such. I do not leave the 5 stars because it would be ideal if all drivers could communicate with foreigners in even basic English to make the experience easier and more pleasant. Although some of the various drivers I had on my tour spoke English, there was one who did not (who picked me up in Phnom Penh and dropped me off at a restaurant where you wait for the vehicle that takes you to the border where you leave Cambodia).

Arrived 30 minutes early. Picked up on time. Dropped to the correct destination. Did have to get in 3 different mini vans and a tuk tuk which was not mentioned but was fine. Car was not 3 years old or newer like advertised, much older. But overall good

The whole trip was super well organized. We were guided all the way to Laos with different staff. We also had good air-conditioned vans and it was very comfortable. Only at the border we had to wait about 40 minutes for the next van, but that was totally ok. It went quite quickly for us at the border.

After a complicated start, everything went well ! They told us to go to Maneth Transportation in the morning, but it was closed ! In fact, we had to stay at our guesthouse, and the minivan came to get us directly there (with 45min late). Don’t panic haha and send them an email to be sure that they’ll come at your hostel. After this start, everything went well : the drivers were super nice and we arrived on time !

1) they ask us to take the boat from don det to the mainland at, 9:00 am, but when arriving we still need to wait 40 min... Why not make everyone arrive at same time or take boat at 9:30 ? 2) They only stop for eating at a certain place (stung treng i think )where THERE IS ONLY ONE RESTAURANT AVAILABLE NEARBY ASKING 4X THE AVERAGE PRICE OF A LOCAL RESTAURANT AND TASTES BELOW AVERAGE. THIS IS REALLY SOMETHING THAT CAN NOT BE DONE. DROP US OF SOMEWHERE WHERE WE CAN CHOOSE WHAT & WHERE WE WANT TO EAT. WE RE JUST BEING RIPPED OFF. Coca cola costs: 2,5$, what a joke => 7eleven coca is at 0,66$ Instant noodles costs 2,5$ => same noodle at 7eleven costs 0,60$ 3) Also when stopping for lunch, we dont know how long we have and when we ask when do we leave, they keep saying 10 min, 10 min. We left finally like 1h after the stop which was only supposed to be 30 min 4) They ask at least 10 times to check tickets The free dropoff to our hotels was nice and the 2 drivers in cambodia were really kind !

Helpful staff. Not too many stops. Easy process. We received emails from AVT to check where we wanted to be picked up and they were very responsive.

Everything on time, well organized, I was always confident that I would arrive where I wanted to go, at approximate time expected. The 2nd van to Banlung not very comfy, AC barely worked on a hot day. But bearable. Driver didn’t speak English, I was the only non Cambodian on the bus. All fine it just makes it a bit more difficult to understand what’s going on.

The trip itself was good and well organized. Just the driver were a bit odd as they were not talking to us at all and just stopping somewhere without saying where to go now. So it was good that AVT provides you with a detailed PDF.

Tricky border crossing into Laos. Language barrier and average collective transport: 15 people + luggage crammed into the back of the vehicle.

Phnom Penh - Don Det. Well organised trip. Got a desription of the itinerary (with pictures) per email beforehand, which was really helpful, especially since the driver didn't really speak English. In short it was a Van until Stung Treng, different Van to the border, Songthaew to Nakasang and boat to Don Det. Departure was a bit late. There was nobody to speak to at the departure point, but the company sent me a whatsapp message to inform me about the delay (which I only read later, because I didn't have internet). Lots of random stops before we really got going. The first driver was speeding and honking all the way. I've done quite a few bus trips in SEA already and I know the driving is different here. But this driver was driving like the street belonged to him alone and I didn't feel comfortable. One time he almost hit a scooter driver. The change in Stung Treng went smoothly and before the border we got the visa application form and had the opportunity to get a photo taken. Also after the border everything went as planned. We arrived on Don Det at around 17:45. Only other thing I could complain about is that despite the quite high price there are no snacks or drinks (not even water) included (but that wasn't advertised either). All in all I can recommend this journey.

Good experience, everything super explained even a person from the company talked to me by whatsapp at the beginning of the trip to ask me how it was going and explain me the instructions of the trip. The only thing is that the minivan is not very spacious, we barely changed and it is 6 hours.

The people were really friendly and everything happened as they said it would. The only thing was that we were cramped in the back of the minivan even though we paid for 3 seats for the 2 of us to try and avoid this. However, when we arrived in Siem Reap they gave us back the money for the third seat!!!! We didn't even ask - now that's what I call service.

Website was easy to use. Tickets were given at the company's office once we showed the voucher. Information about contacting company provided via emails. The company took care if everything for the price of the ticket. Hotel pick up, buses to the border, bus from the Laos border to Nakasang and the boat to the islands. The brief explanation was given at the first office. Guys know what they doing.

We received a email about the exact location and the mini-van arrived just at the right time. He gave us tickets for the following minivans and boat. The minivan was Indeed quite récent, but you have only a belt for the belly and not for the torso, which i think is useless (thats why the minus one star). To be fair, all the minivans are like this. We eat at Stoeng Troeng for one hour and the Price for the food was really fair. Then we headed to the border on another bus. After the border, a smaller mini-van took us to the Pier to take the boat to Don Det. It was really smooth and the drivers were nice and helpul.

The minivan from Nakasang was overloaded. Arriving at the border, the border police were obnoxious and aggressive. "Mr Hout" was useless, except for exchanging our tickets. A very bad start. But the worst was yet to come... The next minivan was designed for 11 people, with a boot that could only hold 2 bags. The vehicle was full of bags. A family of 4 had to travel on 3 seats (even though they had paid for 4). We had to raise our voice to force them to travel properly. At every turn, the backpacks fell on the passengers and children. We were the ones who had to secure the backpacks at the 1st stop. As the van was overloaded, the driver stopped to take...2 more members of his family! Who sat between the passenger and the driver. Safety was at zero: no one was strapped in, backpacks everywhere, 4 people in front. We paid $29 for this trip. Other passengers: $19! We left Don Det together and made the same trip, under the same conditions. What did we have to pay so much for, with no different service? AVT can't offer travel agency services without providing any real insurance.

All the avt staff was extrem kindly an helpful, also crossing the border and they arraged everything to continue the trip. So i see my trip to don det as a little adventure, think positive. We didn’t have a choice as we were going from Phnom Penh to don det and AVT is the only company performing the transfer So we picked them even though het had some bad reviews ( that I agree with btw) Do not expect any luxury car based on the price you pay They take you from point A to B more or less safely but service is not great , we waited an hour in Phnom Penh for no reason and the service in Laos is very bad But we got to our destination hopefully in one piece

We were picked us at the hotel.in Pakse. We were the last one so we had to sit down on the back, with the luggages that bumping me all time because of the road's potholes. Besides, seats were so much tight that I couldn't breathe. When we get to the border of Cambodia, we had to leave the minivan and cross the frontier by walking. After that, we had to get into another minivan worse than the last one. This time, the seats available were foldable seat, very tight and without headrest. The minivan was to much dirty and the trip very uncomfortable till to get to a Cambodian city where we finally could have a minivan according with the price and service paid. 30€/person paid for the travel we finally had, is to much. The service in Laos, terrible. The service in Siam Reap, good.

Was pickup from hotel on time, in Pakse, in a good looking van. Did the rounds to get other guests and then we were driven to a location there in Pakse where we all transferred to an old beat up local bus. I was told that I was going to be traveling in a modern van. No, it was an old bus with very bad suspension. It’s AC was good, though. Exiting Lao and entering Cambodia, both sets of bureaucrats will rip you off. The Cambodian ones will literally bark at you and try to order you around. I sternly put a stop to that nonsense as I screamed louder than they did: it worked. The last leg into Siem Reap the driver decided to pickup a local lady, a very fat one at that, and the rest of us had to accommodate for that, resulting in crammed quarters for us paying costumers. In Siem Reap the tuk tuk driver said that hotel transfer was free. I corrected him by saying that the transfer wasn’t free, that it was included in the price we paid. The roads in Cambodia aren’t as good as the ones in Lao. All in all it wasn’t too bad. After all we’re here for the experience, aren’t we.
