How to get from Siem Reap to Bangkok

There are a lot of private operators offering Siem Reap–Bangkok tickets virtually at every corner in Siem Reap. Sometimes tickets from Siem Reap to Bangkok or Pattaya are sold at as low as USD15. While travelling with these operators you will definitely reach your destination, be aware, though, that your journey may last much longer than expected due to that usual Cambodian perception of ‘good service’. What you will have is likely to be a worn out bus with extremely limited luggage space – actually backpacks and suitcases are piled right in the aisle. Even if nowadays the road between Siem Reap and Poipet boasts quite a decent roadway covering, these buses tend to spend from four to five hours instead of two to reach the border as they call in at a number of souvenir shops and cafes on their way in a hope to wheedle some dollars out of your pockets. No use in arguing, just take it for granted that your journey will be a long one.

Another inconvenient moment is that you have to change the bus at the Thai side after having gone through all the border formalities. If there are enough people for a big bus, you will travel with much more comfort. Sometimes they use a minibus instead which is a bit less pleasant as drivers of minibuses – God knows why – are notorious for their mad speedy driving, so a ride from the border to the capital is not for a faint-hearted. Leg and luggage space is limited in a minibus, too.

There is a direct international bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok operated by Siem Reap Transport Co. It leaves daily at 8am from the office of Nattakan Cambodia Co., Ltd. (22 Sivatha Road). They provide VIP buses which are generally in good condition, but note that there is not too much leg space for a Western traveller. Otherwise buses are quite comfortable, there is a toilet on board and two meals – a small breakfast and lunch – are served during the trip. Do not expect too much from your meals, though – breakfast is a muffin with orange juice or milk, and the lunchbox contains rice with some sort of a curry. International bus tickets from Siem Reap to Bangkok are more expensive than those from Bangkok to Siem Reap and cost THB1149. The main advantage of the international bus is that you do not need to change it at the border which is the case if you book two separate trips – from Siem Reap to Poipet and from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok. Travel time is about eight hours but sometimes the queues at the border crossing both at the Cambodian and Thai sides are endless, so be ready to sweat for a couple hours under the scorching sun. In Bangkok, the international bus arrives to the Northern bus terminal, Morchit, which is located at the northern outskirts of the city. It is linked with the centre of Bangkok by BTS and with both international airports of Bangkok by bus.

As mentioned above, you can opt for two separate trips – from Siem Reap to the border (Poipet) and from the border (Aranyaprathet) to Bangkok. It may take a bit longer than if travelling by the international bus, but you can start from Siem Reap later that the international bus departs. The best way to get to Poipet is by a shared taxi (about USD40 per car). When on the Thai side, take a bus from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok. Aranyaprathet’s bus station is located 6 km from the border, so you will need a tuk-tuk to get there after you have got your permission to enter Thailand. There is also a Rong Klua Market bus station right by the border. Aran bus company offers both express and VIP24 buses from the Aranyaprathet and Rong Klua Market bus stations heading to Bangkok throughout the day. Tickets cost from THB238 to THB254, travel time to Bangkok is from 3½ hours to 5¼ hours. Buses arrive to Morchit, the Northern Bus Terminal.

Tip: Poipet–Aranyaprathet border crossing is open daily from 7am till 10pm, but if you are going to take a bus to Bangkok from Aranyaprathet the same day, note that you have to arrive to the Rong Klua Market bus station by 5pm or to the city bus station by 5.30pm. Otherwise you will have to sleep in Aranyaprathet and continue your journey the next day.

It was all good except that at the border, the whole bus had to wait for the 2 passengers who didn't have their visas ready. We arrived in Bangkok night time already.

The staff were friendly. Food was great. It's just that we arrived about 2-3hrs later because there were two passengers who had problems with their visas and we had to wait for them to process and finish it. Also luggage had a fragile sticker on it in bold red however it was still tossed in the compartment. When I told the staff to turn the luggage over on the other side, he just shrugged and continued texting. I just scooted in the compartment and turned it over myself.

Staff were exellent. The trip had mishaps, however these are traveller originated issues. A ten minute break that turns into a lot longer because some passengers are just silly is not the carriers problem. Issues with border VISA issuinng etc is also uncontroable, not the carriers is.sue. The carrier, Giant Ibis could encourage both border governments to better manage and streamline the many inefficiencies occuring. This causes negativeresponses ans traveller numbers to fall.

The organisational part of the travel was great, however, the driver’s way of driving was sometimes very questionable. The road’s are not great in Cambodia so speeding up while driving on a bumpy road is very unsafe.

It seemed like a journey of mishaps. The bus should depart at 7.45am from Siem Reap to Bangkok - we were advised a few days before from Giant Ibis that due to technical issues the bus would depart at 8.45am. We turned up and we eventually left at 10am because the bus that we were going on had technical issues. The staff were very good and tried to keep us informed. When we got to the border we had an extra hour wait due to visa issues from 3 of the travellers - they ended up not travelling from the border to Bangkok. Once again staff kept us informed. What was supposed to be 2 drop offs in Bangkok ended up only being 1 due to traffic congestion on the way in.

Giant Ibis was a great choice. Our guide was really knowledgeable of how things work at the boarder and helped us all the way through. They gave us a croissnst and coffee in the morning and fried rice for lunch with water. The only downside is that there's no toilet on the bus and the wifi wasn't working properly but it was not an issue at all. Super happy with the company and 12go Asia.

Service was good! Staff proficient in English. Breakfast snack, coffee, water and lunch provided. Only downside that we had to wait more than 2 hours for some passengers having trouble with their immigration (which is nor their fault) and unfortunately my bag got a little soaked in the trunk.

Very good overall. Strong WiFi, adequate stops, smooth border process, plenty of legroom and comfort. However we were due to arrive at 3.45pm and arrived at 6pm. Some of this was down to traffic but even without it we still would have been late by an hour at least. Don’t expect to arrive on time.

The system is bad! Double reservation. I booked Giant Ibis ticket Siem Reap to Bangkok 6 months earlier via 12Go (21 March 2019) with my credit card for departure August 26. In my e-ticket the seat number was 2A-2B. .I was shocked because two passenger had the same seat with me (number 2A & 2B). The Giant ibis conductor asked me to get off the bus and direct me to the service desk in order my ticket to be checked. I was dissapointed because Giant Ibis staff only cheked my ticket but did nothing to the two Passengers whose the same seat (2A-2B). The staff didn't checked their ticket left me as if the mistake is on me. That was unfair and very not professional. The staff should be check both tickets-mine and the two others passenger in order to find the problem. There were double reservation. The staff said someone had cancelled my ticket and sell my seat to other Passengers. This is absurd! How come my reservation thas i had been booked 6 months earlier erased and someone took my seat just like that. My second disappointment the staff transfer me to another seat 1D which i did not feel comfortable. The bad system could be inflict the loss for passengers

Everything was very well organized and the guides always tried to do the best for us. The bus was comfortable, food and drinks were provided constantly and there were also enough stops for a quick refresh at one of the roadside restaurants.

Very happy with this trip. Particular thanks to the young guy who helped us negotiate the less than trivial border crossing. Warmly recommended.

This was the third trip we had taken with Giant Ibis and they’ve been great every time! There was some trouble at the border with a person who didn’t have the proper documents and the Giant Ibis staff handled it really well. It made us about three hours late getting into Bangkok but that wasn’t their fault.

This bus had bigger seats than other Giant Ibis busses I’ve ridden on in the past, with foot rests as well- very comfortable ride! Safe driver and staff helped us across the border smoothly. Good trip!
