Upmarket Japan retailer to open Bangkok store

Upmarket Japanese retailer Takashimaya has signed a contract with a Thai developer to build a department store in Bangkok. The company announced earlier in the week that it was investing THB3 billion in the new store at the ICONSIAM complex.

The store is scheduled to open in 2017 and will further cement the Thai capital’s status as the biggest retail hub in Southeast Asia. The man in charge of the Bangkok Takashimaya project, Yutaka Yamaguchi, promised the new store would be amazing and, coupled with its prime location at ICONSIAM, was set to pull in discerning shoppers from all over the globe.

Mr Yamaguchi said the Japanese department store chain was looking forward to collaborating with Thai suppliers to offer consumers a bespoke experience with the best Japanese, international and Thai brands on offer. He said Takashimaya would ensure it carried a collection of unique articles only sold at the ICONSIAM outlet.

He finished off with the remark that if all went well at the ICONSIAM store, Takashimaya would look into the possibility of establishing additional outlets in key Thai cities and seaside resorts. Commenting on the new tie-up, ICONSIAM CEO Pasinee Limatibul stated that it was concrete proof that the complex was going to provide Thais and tourists with the finest Thai and international shopping.
