Thailand remains top choice for film producers

Figures just released by Thailand’s Tourism Ministry show that the nation remains a firm favourite for the on-location filming of movies, documentaries and advertising commercials. The ministry’s film bureau says that in the eight-month period from January to August 2014, international producers staged 384 on-location shoots in Thailand.

TTR Weekly reported that producers shot footage or scenes for 28 films and 54 television productions, 89 documentaries and a whopping 187 commercials. The remainder of the productions were video clips for songs. While the number of actual shoots has dropped about 20 per cent when compared to the corresponding period for 2013, the income derived rose considerably.

The Tourism Ministry figures show that filmmakers from Europe took the lion’s share of the productions with a total of 73 different productions. Japan and India were in second and third position respectively. Productions for Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan also contributed to the total significantly.

The Thai film bureau was established to encourage and assist international moviemakers in shooting productions in the country. Tourism Ministry directors and marketing staff said on-location film shoots served the dual purpose of generating income and employment as well as showcasing Thailand’s abundant delights without paying for extensive advertising campaigns.
